Sunday, May 6 Spanish GP 125, 250 recap Reuters JEREZ, Spain -- Japan's Daijiro Katoh produced another flawless ride to land his third win in a row with victory in the 250cc Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. The 24-year-old Honda rider, who started on pole, had a brief duel with compatriot Tetsuya Harada, on an Aprilia, in the early stages of the race, before powering clear. "I asked my mechanics to set the bike up to the limit and they did it perfectly and all I had to do was ride my own race," said Katoh. Katoh leads the championship with a perfect 75 points, 19 ahead of Harada. Harada finished nearly 12 seconds behind Katoh. Another Aprilia rider, Marco Melandri of Italy completed the podium with compatriot and team mate Marcellino Lucchi in fourth. Spain's Fonsi Nieto, also riding an Aprilia, completed a good day for the Nieto family by matching his cousin Angel's performance in the 125cc category and finishing fifth. Spain's former 125cc world champion Emilio Alzamora gave the home crowd more to cheer about as he crossed the line in sixth position. Japan's Masao Azuma, riding a Honda, secured his second victory of the season when he won the 125cc Spanish Grand Prix at the Jerez circuit on Sunday. Azuma, who won the first race of the season at Suzuka, now leads the world championship ahead of Youichi Ui who slid off three laps from the end. Italy's Lucio Cecchinello, riding an Aprilia, finished second, 4.623 seconds behind the 30-year-old Azuma, after he battled through the field following a terrible start from the front row of the grid. Third place went to compatriot and Aprilia rider Gino Borsoi who made the podium for the second time in his career. Manuel Poggiali of San Marino challenged for a career first grand prix victory as he battled with Azuma for the lead. But the 18-year-old Poggiali lost control of his Gilera as he hit the kerb on the last lap and was thrown on to the gravel trap. Spain's Angel Nieto Jr., son of 13-times world champion Angel Nieto, gave the 100,000-strong home crowd something to cheer about by finishing fifth on his Honda. |
