Friday, March 2 Runner-up effort had positives By Jeremy McGrath Special to ESPN.com Although I came in second to RC (Ricky Carmichael) in Atlanta, there were still some positives for Team Mazda Yamaha. In the first qualifier I took the hole shot and started to run away with it, but on a little double I cross-rutted on the take off and lost the bars. I had to jump off my bike and I couldn't come back to win. I qualified in the next race, but that left me with a pretty bad pick on the starting line for the main event. The first qualifier was a bit of a downer, but I put it behind me and raced a strong main event. I started on the right side of the gate, in the left-hand corner and I still took the hole shot from the outside. I had a bad angle on the next corner and RC and Tim Ferry passed me. I was able to pass Ferry, and was about five seconds behind RC at that point. I cut it to two seconds at the end of the race, but I just couldn't quite catch him. If I was to describe my season to this point, I would say I have been consistent. I am riding at about 95 percent, but I have made a few mistakes. Normally that wouldn't cost me, but RC has just been awesome to this point. I have to give him credit. He is really fit and strong this year. His preseason regiment has to be given credit. He is riding on the edge at 110 percent and his corner speed has been amazing, but he is still in striking distance with nine races left. I am going to stay dedicated on the weekends and on the practice track, and eliminate my mistakes. I have a great team and we will continue to work hard and keep a positive attitude until we finish the race in Vegas. Don't count Jeremy McGrath and Team Mazda Yamaha out yet ... the Supercross season is more of a marathon, not a sprint. New Orleans has been good to me the past three years. The dirt and the track are always good, and I am looking forward to getting out on the track and getting a W. Seven-time Supercross champion Jeremy McGrath will be providing a weekly diary for ESPN.com. |
