Sunday, March 4 RC joins a new club By B.J. Smith Motoworld.com NEW ORLEANS, La. - Ricky Carmichael did it again with a dominating win at the Superdome and joined the five in a row club in the process. RC now joins the ranks of Rick Johnson, Jeremy McGrath, Bob Hannah and Damon Bradshaw on the five Supercross wins in a row sheet. With the season halfway through, Carmichael now has six wins and set another record - he has won more races in one season than any other Kawasaki rider. Jeff Ward had five wins in 1987. Defending champion, Jeremy McGrath pulled the holeshot in the main event and was followed into the second corner by Carmichael and hometown boy Kevin Windham. McGrath ended the first lap with a half-second lead over points leader RC. 36,565 fans waited patiently for the battle of the century and Carmichael made his move on lap three when he showed McGrath a wheel several times before railing by the champ at the start of lap four. McGrath made a failed attempt to retaliate, but Carmichael inched away slowly. The track at the Superdome was technical and many riders had trouble with the landings, including Carmichael who got up close and personal with his front fender on two occasions. McGrath, running three seconds behind Carmichael, made a rare mistake when one of the track's landings sent him hurling over the bars. He remounted and was passed by Windham but the always charging Mike LaRocco used his momentum to slip by for third. McGrath, bent handlebars and all, rode to a modest but frustrating fourth place. "It's not often, you see something like that," McGrath said. "I'm riding well, I'm just getting tight out there. I don't know what happened. It was my fault and I need to get something together here, because Ricky's pulling away." Carmichael put it on the cruise control for the final few laps, falling four seconds off his fastest lap, but he still finished almost 10 seconds ahead of Windham and lapped all the way through eighth place. LaRocco rounded out the podium and McGrath and David Vuillemin topped off the top five. "I felt good out there," Carmichael said. "Jeremy got the holeshot and I was able to follow and eventually take his lines. I almost threw it away though over on that quad. My back end came up and I was holding on for dear life." "I'll feel home at Daytona," he said. "There are a lot of strong guys though, so there will be a lot of competition." Main Event: 1. Ricky Carmichael 2. Kevin Windham 3. Mike LaRocco 4.
