 Protecting the records
By Jeremy McGrath
Special to ESPN.com
I am coming off of another loss to Ricky Carmichael this week. I finished
sixth in Salt Lake City despite taking the holeshot.
I started well and was
leading for a while, but it was an extremely technical course and Tim Ferry
and Kevin Windham passed me with some good racing. It is disappointing, but
I have one more race this season to try end things on a positive note.
I have heard that people are saying that I am not motivated now that Ricky
has clinched the title and that the Vans Triple Crown race is over, but they
could not be more wrong.
I have so much to race for. First and foremost, I
race for my sponsors Mazda and Yamaha, who have stuck by throughout this
tough year.
Second, I know that records are made to be broken, but I am not
ready for RC to break my consecutive wins or one-season win record.
Lastly, don't think that I could have had the success that I've enjoyed without a
competitive attitude. I never get on my bike thinking that I am not going
to win that particular race. I hate losing, and that has made this year
tough for me.
This week, all the pressure is on RC, which is actually nice for a change.
Everyone is talking about the records and I know that he wants them badly.
I am going to go out and make sure that I keep the pressure on him. He has
raced great this year, but he has also been on the edge and gotten a little
squirrelly at times.
I know that if I can make him have to catch me, or be
breathing down his neck throughout the race, he will press and make a
mistake.
Stay tuned, Saturday's race will be awesome!
