Wednesday, July 24 A look at the weekend in racing Associated Press Here's a breakdown of this weekend's action in the world of motorsports. (All times ET)
Winston Cup
Last race: Ward Burton collected his first victory since the season-opening Daytona 500 by winning the New England 300. Burton, who started 31st, took the lead with 10 laps left when Matt Kenseth had a deflating tire and held off Jeff Green by 3.230 seconds for his fifth career win.
Last year: Bobby Labonte passed Dale Earnhardt Jr. with a little more than two laps remaining to take the Pennsylvania 500 for his first victory of the season. Fast facts: Dale Jarrett recorded his first victory in almost 11 months at the Pocono 500 on June 9. Jarrett took the lead from Jeff Burton on lap 179 and held on for his first win since July in New Hampshire, a span of 30 races. ... Johnny Benson is expected to return this weekend after missing the last two weeks with broken ribs suffered in the Daytona 400 on July 6. ... Geoffrey Bodine will be driving in place of brother Todd this weekend. Todd Bodine is committed to driving in the Busch race at Pikes Peak. ... Labonte finished second in 1997 and 1999, and third in 1998. ... Rusty Wallace set the track record for fastest winning speed at 144.892 mph in 1996. ... Jeff Gordon was the last driver to win consecutive Pennsylvania 500s in 1996 and 1997. Gordon has a career-long winless streak of 27 races dating to a victory in Kansas last September. CART
Last race: Patrick Carpentier recorded his first win of the year and denied Cristiano da Matta his fifth straight Grand Prix of Cleveland victory by taking the 115-lap event on July 14. Da Matta left the race on lap 21 with a boost problem while Michael Andretti finished second.
Last year: Roberto Moreno passed Gil de Ferran with nine laps left to win the Vancouver Molson Indy. The Brazilian finished a full straightaway ahead of de Ferran. Alex Tagliani led the first 68 laps of the race but did not finish the race due to mechanical problems. Fast Facts: This is the 13th year of the race, but just the fourth with this track setup. ... Paul Tracy became the first Canadian to win in Vancouver in 2000. ... No driver has led every lap of the race. ... Al Unser Jr. won four of the first six CART races in Vancouver, with Michael Andretti taking the other two in 1991 and 1992. ... Juan Pablo Montoya won from the pole in 1999. ... Mauricio Gugelmin earned his only CART win at the 1997 race. ... de Ferran took over first place in the standings last year in Vancouver and held on to repeat as CART champion. Formula One
Last race: Michael Schumacher won the Grand Prix of France to clinch his fifth career Formula One championship, equaling the record previously set by Juan Manuel Fangio. Schumacher has won eight of his last 11 races.
Last year: Ralf Schumacher won a wild German Grand Prix on his home track in a Formula One race marked by a crash that involved his brother and forced a restart. Michael Schumacher, who was not injured in the wreck, quit in the 24th lap of a race in which only 10 cars finished. Fast facts: Michael Schumacher is the first driver to win the title as early as July and with six races remaining on the schedule. He also set a record of 16 consecutive points finishes, one better than previous record holder Argentine Carlos Reutemann ... The Hockenheimring was renovated since last year's race. The length of the course was reduced from 4.239 miles to 2.842 and the famous forest section was removed. ... Juan Pablo Montoya has started on the pole in each of the last five races. He finished second last week. ... Only 19 cars started last week's race, with just 10 finishing. ... Jenson Button and BAR Racing agreed to a four-year contract this week. Button, seventh in the points standings, was told by Renault that he would not be retained at the end of the season. ... Jaguar drivers Eddie Irvine and Pedro de la Rosa did not finish the race last year. Next race: Hungarian Grand Prix, Aug. 18, Budapest.
IRL
Last race: Alex Barron outran Gil de Ferran in the final two laps after a restart, winning the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville by 0.42 seconds for his first IRL victory in only his 11th start. Barron led only the final 11 laps to become the fourth first-time winner in the last five IRL races.
Last year: Inaugural race. Fast facts: Al Unser Jr. has logged 8,128 miles in 22 open-wheel races at Michigan, but has just one victory. His win in 1990 at an average speed of 189.727 mph remains the fastest 500-mile race in the world. ... Of the IRL champions, only last year's winner Sam Hornish Jr. and 1996 co-champion Buzz Calkins have never started a race at Michigan. ... Michigan Speedway has held an open-wheel race every year since 1968. ... De Ferran recorded his fourth second-place finish of the season last week, moving him into the points lead by 10 ahead of Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves. Next race: Belterra Casino Indy 300, Aug. 11, Sparta, Ky.
Busch
Last race: Greg Biffle got his third Busch victory of the season, holding off Ron Hornaday in the Charter Pipeline 250 at Gateway International Raceway. Biffle, the series leader who will jump to Winston Cup next year with his Roush Racing team, edged Hornaday by 1.945 seconds. Last year: Jeff Purvis ran away with the NAPA AutoCare 250, beating Jeff Green by 15.782 seconds at Pikes Peak. Purvis, who won for the first time in five years, was making his second start for Richard Childress Racing. He lost his regular ride four weeks earlier, when Joe Gibbs Racing dropped its second Busch series team. Fast facts: Biffle, who has eight victories in 55 series starts, leads Jason Keller by 72 points in the standings. All three of Biffle's wins this season have come in the last seven races. ... Brothers Jeff and David Green took the top two places in the 2000 race. Jeff beat his older brother by less than a second after battling fender to fender for the last 85 laps. ... In four starts in Fountain, Jack Sprague has finished in the top-five three times, including a third-place showing last year. Sprague recorded his 12th Top 10 finish of the season last week. ... Part-time Busch driver Andy Kirby, 40, was killed July 18 in a motorcycle accident near his home in Tennessee. He had made 12 Busch starts this season, including a sixth-place finish at Talladega in April. Next race: Kroger 200, Aug. 3, Clermont, Ind.
Craftsman Truck
Last race: Terry Cook benefited when more bad luck struck Jason Leffler, then held off Dennis Setzer in a two-lap shootout Saturday to win the New England 200 at New Hampshire Speedway. Leffler, starting from the pole for the seventh time this season, was poised for his first Craftsman victory when he crashed into the lapped truck of Tom Carey Jr. with 38 laps to go. Last year: No race. Fast facts: The last truck race at Michigan was held in 2000, when Greg Biffle won his second straight Michigan 200. At the time of Biffle's win, he and teammate Kurt Busch had combined for seven victories in the previous nine races. ... Leffler has five poles in the past six races. He does, however, have eight Top 10 finishes this season. ... Michigan held its inaugural truck race in 1999. Of the two races, Dennis Setzer has had the most success by finishing eighth in 1999 and fifth a year later. Terry Cook's finishes of 13th and ninth are next best. ... Phil Bonifield has completed just 13 of a possible 200 laps in Michigan, leaving the 1999 event after 10 laps due to a vibration and departing after three laps the following year due to brake trouble. NHRA
Last race: Darrell Russell raced to his second Top Fuel victory of the season, beating Cory McClenathan in the final of the Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals in Morrison, Colo. Del Worsham, Mike Edwards and Colorado racer Matt Hines also won their divisions in the competition. Last year: Gary Scelzi raced to his first victory of the season, beating Kenny Bernstein in the Top Fuel final of the Northwest Nationals. Whit Bazemore and Mark Osborne also won at Seattle International Raceway. Fast facts: Seattle International Raceway joined the NHRA in 1975, but went off the schedule for eight years. It returned in 1988. ... In each of the last 14 years, the Pro Stock driver who has left the event with the points lead has gone on to win the championship. ... Cory McClenathan recorded his 300th round win last week with a victory over John Smith last week. ... Kenny Bernstein evened his record against female competitors to 18-18 after his first-round win over Rhonda Hartman-Smith last week. ...
