Last race: Kurt Busch became the 11th different winner in as many races at Martinsville when he took the Old Dominion 500. Busch won from the 36th starting position, replacing Lee Petty as the driver farthest back in the field to win in track history. Petty won the 1959 race from the 24th position.

Last year: Jeff Gordon clinched the season title with a sixth-place finish. Bobby Labonte, the 2000 series champion, won the NAPA 500 when Gordon's teammate, defending race champion Jerry Nadeau, ran out of gas with a half-lap to go.

Fast facts: Jimmie Johnson cut 15 points into Tony Stewart's standings lead after his sixth-place finish at Martinsville. Stewart leads Johnson by 82 points with four races left. ... Stewart won the MBNA America 500 at Hampton on March 10. No driver has swept both races at AMS since Bill Elliott in 1992. ... Johnny Benson has never won in 224 career starts, but has finished second three times. His second-place showing last week was his best finish since the 2000 campaign. ... Events at Atlanta have been won from the pole 13 times. ... The late Dale Earnhardt leads all drivers with nine wins at AMS. ... Jeff Gordon recorded his first career Busch Series victory at AMS in 1992.

Last race: Cristiano da Matta won the inaugural Grand Prix of the Americas in Miami and the season championship on Oct. 6. Da Matta won his seventh race of the season and led the most laps, while his closest rival in the standings, Bruno Junqueira, finished fifth. The 10-point difference between first and fifth and the bonus point for most laps led give da Matta a 69-point lead and the 2002 Vanderbilt Cup. With a maximum of 68 points available in the three remaining races on the schedule, da Matta cannot be overtaken in the standings.

Last year: Gil de Ferran clinched his second straight CART championship with a fourth-place finish in the Honda Indy 300 in Australia. Da Matta took the lead on the 52nd of 65 laps and got his second victory this year.

Fast Facts: Da Matta needs two wins in the final three races to set the CART record for most victories in a season with nine. Michael Andretti (1991) Al Unser Jr. (1994) share the record with eight. ... There have been 11 different winners in as many CART races in Australia. ... Bruno Junqueira holds a 14-point lead over Dario Franchitti for second place in the standings. ... Six drivers expected to start this weekend have recorded wins in Australia. ... Adrian Fernandez and Junqueira are the only drivers this season to win poles on both a road course and an oval track. ... Two races are left after this weekend.

Last race: A day after rain delayed the Sam's Town 250, Scott Wimmer won the race at Memphis after points leader and pole-sitter Greg Biffle crashed on lap 203. Wimmer held off late charges from Ron Hornaday, Stacy Compton and Jamie McMurray and recorded his second career victory and first since Dover on Sept. 21.

Last year: Joe Nemechek gambled by pitting five laps before the rest of the field did and won the Aaron's 312. Nemechek built his comfortable lead when the rest of the cars stopped with 31 laps to go.

Fast facts: Jason Keller cut Biffle's lead in the standings to 105 points after his 10th-place finish at Memphis. The difference was 168 points prior to the race. ... McMurray made last week's race as a provisional after winning the previous week at Charlotte in his second career start. ... The Hispanic Racing Team, formed by Mike Vazquez and Rudy Rodriguez in 1999, will field the first NASCAR team in which all of its key components (owner, driver and primary sponsor) are of Hispanic descent. Roberto Guerrero, a former open-wheel racer, will drive for the team after David Green did so in previous races. ... Green is expected to make his 250th career Busch start this weekend. ... Jack Roush is the only owner with multiple Busch wins at Atlanta. Biffle will be looking to win for him this weekend after Mark Martin did from 1997-98 and 2000. ... Jeff Gordon recorded his first Busch victory during the inaugural race in 1992.

Last event: Jeg Coughlin moved another step closer to his second Pro Stock championship by winning at the O'Reilly Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex on Oct. 13, his third victory in a row and seventh in the last 10 events. Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Del Worsham (Funny Car) also won.

Last year: Rookie Darrell Russell won his second Top Fuel race of the season at the NHRA's ACDelco Nationals. Ron Capps (Funny Car), Mark Pawuk (Pro Stock) and Shawn Gann (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners.

Fast facts: There is one event remaining after this week. ... Kalitta has won three of the last four national events and climbed from sixth to third place in the standings during that time. ... Capps' Funny Car exploded during the first round at Texas Motorplex when the intake valve retainer broke. Capps had just a headache and sore knees. ... Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Gary Densham (Funny Car) and Ron Krisher (Pro Stock) all won at the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Las Vegas on April 7.

Craftsman Trucks
Last race: David Starr broke a 65-race winless streak, outdueling points leader Mike Bliss in the Las Vegas 350 on Oct. 13, giving him and team owner Wayne Spears their first career victories. Starr, who started his Chevrolet from the pole, took the lead on the 142nd of 146 laps when Ted Musgrave's Dodge cut a right front tire and headed for pit road.

Next race: Craftsman 250, Nov. 2, Fontana, Calif.

F1
Last race: Michael Schumacher won his third straight Japanese Grand Prix and 11th race this season. The five-time world champion led a 1-2 finish for Ferrari, with Rubens Barrichello in second. Schumacher was assured the title three months ago with six races remaining. His previous best season was nine wins, which he did three times.

IRL
Last race: Sam Hornish edged Helio Castroneves to win the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sept. 15 to clinch his second straight IRL title. Hornish nipped Castroneves by .0096 seconds, the second closest finish in series history, in becoming the first driver to win two IRL championships. The two closest finishes in the circuit's seven-year history have come in the last two races, with five of the 15 races this season decided by less than one-tenth of a second and eight races with finishing margins of less than one second.
