President had met Earnhardt
Associated Press
WACO, Texas -- President Bush is among those mourning the
death of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt.
The White House says Bush called Earnhardt's widow, Teresa,
after learning the racer had been killed in a final lap crash at
the Daytona 500.
A Bush spokesman says the president's "prayers are with the
Earnhardt family and the NASCAR community."
Bush has attended NASCAR races in the past and considered
Earnhardt a friend.
Last July, Bush visited Daytona Beach to serve as grand marshal
of the Pepsi 400 and shook hands with NASCAR fans, racing crews and
drivers.
He even sat in on the pre-race driver's meeting, taking a seat
in the front row next to Earnhardt.
