Thursday, March 1 Benson's lap bettered track record Associated Press Johnny Benson is getting a lot of attention in Las Vegas after his fast preseason test runs. Benson, sixth Monday in Rockingham, N.C., turned a fast lap of 173.376 mph on the 1½-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Feb. 1. The Winston Cup qualifying record is 172.563, set last year by Ricky Rudd. "We ran well that day, but it doesn't mean a whole lot," Benson said. "The weather is going to be different, the track temperature is going to be different, and the rubber on the track is going to be different. "But we hope the results are the same. To be honest, you don't know what's going to happen until you get there." The Pontiac driver was fifth in the inaugural Las Vegas race in 1998, and finished sixth last year.
