CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR driver Mike Skinner is out
indefinitely because of injuries sustained in a crash last weekend,
and will be replaced by Robby Gordon on a race-by-race basis.
Skinner, who received a concussion and a broken left ankle in
the accident at Chicagoland Speedway, also tore the anterior
cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Car owner Richard Childress on Tuesday picked Gordon to take
over the Chevrolet starting this weekend at New Hampshire
International Speedway
"Mike has another doctor appointment to see what needs to be
done to his knee, but he could be out for at least a couple of
weeks," Childress said.
Skinner wrecked on lap 23 of the inaugural Tropicana 400. He was
in fourth place when he ran over debris and cut the right front
tire, sending him into the outside wall. He was briefly knocked
unconscious and had to be helped from the track.
An examination Monday revealed the torn ACL. He will need
surgery to repair the ankle.
This isn't the first time this season Richard Childress Racing
has turned to Gordon, who was fired earlier this year from his ride
with Morgan-McClure Motorsports.
He drove RCR's Busch Series car a few weeks ago at Watkins Glen,
N.Y., finishing fifth.
"I'm glad to have the opportunity to drive this weekend, but I
wish it was under different circumstances," Gordon said.
This weekend's race will be only the eighth event this season
for Gordon. Since losing his full-time ride, he has sporadically
filled in for other teams and almost won a race in that role.
He was leading the June 24 race at Sears Point Raceway as a
replacement for Mike Wallace when, during a battle with the lapped
car of Kevin Harvick, he lost the lead to eventual race winner Tony
Stewart.
He went on to finish a career-best second. He also has one
top-five and one top-10 finish this season.
In 18 races this season, Skinner has only one top-10 finish and
is 28th in the points. He never has won a Winston Cup race.
