Skinner's knee won't require surgery

WELCOME, N.C. -- Mike Skinner was recovering Thursday
following surgery to repair his left ankle, fractured in a crash
during a Winston Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway.
Dr. Craig Hankins, an orthopedic specialist, performed the
45-minute procedure Wednesday in Daytona Beach, Fla. Skinner then
flew home to North Carolina by private plane.
It also was determined that Skinner will not require surgery for
an injury to his left knee.
"I reset Mike's left ankle and inserted two titanium screws,"
Hankins said. "I expect Mike to make a complete recovery."
Hankins would not estimate the length of Skinner's recovery.
"The healing process takes some time whenever there's an ankle
fracture because you also have a sprain or strain of the
ligaments," Hankins said. "With any surgery, there's going to be
swelling. I'll see Mike again Friday to evaluate the swelling of
the ankle and prescribe his rehabilitation process. I'll have Mike
back in the race car as soon as possible."
Hankins also said that Skinner did not have a torn anterior
cruciate ligament, as feared, but had aggravated an old knee injury
and is not expected to undergo surgery to repair it.
