Check out a short list of drivers to keep an eye on this weekend at Kansas City.
Johnny Benson
Remained the only driver in the top-10 without
a victory after a poor 31st at Dover, Delaware last week;
having one of his better season in recent years with 11
top-10 finishes and earnings over $2 million.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Winner of the MBNA 400 at Dover last week,
his second of the year and fourth career in Winston Cup; the
result bettered his third place finish at that track in June;
up to sixth in the points standings and now is fourth in laps
led with 526; at the start of April the team was as low as
26th in the points, a remarkable run to reach sixth; tested
at Kansas Speedway for a day earlier in the season; purse
winning this year already top $3.5 million, which is third on
the list; first win this year was scored at the Pepsi 400 at
Daytona International Speedway where his father was killed in
a crash in February's Daytona 500.
Jeff Gordon
Maintained consistency with a fourth-place finish
at Dover Downs this past Sunday; it was his series leading
17th top-five result; leads and is near the top of several
series categories including wins (5), poles (6), laps led
(1,921) and money earned, over $5.6 million; has 212 points
lead over second place Ricky Rudd in the standings; on pace
to capture his fourth career NASCAR Winston Cup championship
provided he avoids any major letdown in the last nine races.
Dale Jarrett
Placed 12th at Dover and fell another spot down
to fourth in the points table; second most wins this year
with four races to his name and poles (4); has scored 10 top
fives and 13 top-10 results.
Bobby Labonte
Among the series winners this year with, notching
his 17th career at the Pennsylvania 500 on July 29; a lowly
finish of 36th at Dover pushed him down three slots to ninth
in the points standings; has only five other top-five results
in addition to his victory; has topped the $3 million mark in
earning this season.
Sterling Marlin
A good eighth place finish at the MBNA Cal
Ripkin Jr. 400 at Dover Downs Speedway marked his 14th top
10 this year; he started 26th, but battled to the front of
the pack during the early stages of the race; fifth overall
in the Winston Cup standings, 63 points out of fourth; the
25-year-veteran is having one of his better years in recent
times; won the Pepsi 400 at Michigan Speedway for his first
win in more than five years and seventh career; it was the
first win for Dodge since 1977 when Neil Bonnett won at
Ontario Motor Speedway in California; led a total of 348
laps which is seventh best this year.
Mark Martin
His bad season continued at Dover where he was
32nd; cannot seem to snap out of a bad luck run the last
several races; a driver who usually does well in inaugural
races having posted four straight top-10 finishes, including
a win, in the past four inaugural races; has five top top-10
results in the nine inaugural races held since 1988; 12th in
the Winston Cup standings.
Ricky Rudd
Another track incident with Rusty Wallace may have
cost him the victory at Dover Downs, but in the end had to
settle for a third place finish; riding a wave of momentum
after also winning at Richmond the previous race; feels the
championship is within grasp as he trails leader Jeff Gordon
by 212 points with 10 races remaining; earned 19 top-10
finishes this year, two wins and has finished seventh or
better in five of his last six races; his two victories
(his first in more than two years) for the 44-year-old veteran
were posted at the Pocono 500 in June and earlier this month
at the Monte Carlo 400; has done weel over the years at
inaugural races, with five top-fives in nine he has entered,
winning the inaugural event at Sears Point in 1989.
Tony Stewart
Another top-five result, his 11th of the year,
at Dover last Sunday, improved his status to third in the
points behind leader Jeff Gordon and Ricky Rudd; is 200
points behind Rudd; recorded three victories this year,
which is third-best in the series to Gordon (5) and Dale
Jarrett (4); led 213 laps in 28 races.
Rusty Wallace
Has finished in the top-10 in nine inaugural
races held since 1988; missed a top-10 finish at Dover,
placing 11th; captured his 54th career victory at the NAPA
Auto Parts 500 in April; second to Jeff Gordon in laps led
with 896 and is eighth in the standings.
