Wallace upset at dangerous conditions
By Cary Estes

Rusty Wallace might be leery of driving at Talladega Superspeedway under the current restrictor-plate rules, but he is not the least bit leery about giving his opinion of those rules.

Drivers are complaining that the current aerodynamic and restrictor-plate requirements at Talladega are packing the cars together tighter than ever, increasing the danger at a track that always has been dangerous.

Rusty Wallace says there are a handful of drivers who simply are not cautious enough on the track.

So as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series prepares to return to Talladega this week for Sunday's EA Sports 500, Wallace does not attempt to hide his displeasure about competing in the race under the current rules.

"We know this rule is wrong. We know it's dangerous. We know it packs the cars up too much. And there hasn't been a change," Wallace said. "It's dejecting.

"It's going to be bumper-to-bumper, compact. It doesn't matter if you qualify first or last. The whole field is going to rotate. You're not going to see any difference from last time.

"I dread going to Talladega. I don't know any driver who likes going to Talladega. I'm going there to win. But it's not my talent that's going to win the race. It's if I get in the right lane and avoid trouble. I don't like that style of racing. I hate those new rules. That's just the way it is."

Several drivers have complained in recent months about what they perceive as an increase in aggressive and even dangerous driving on the circuit.

Wallace said there are a handful of drivers who simply are not cautious enough on the track. And that, he said, is a major problem at Talladega, where it nearly is impossible to put any distance between the cars.

"There's concern, because there are some guys out there who you just don't trust the way they drive," Wallace said. "If you're a smart driver, you're just going to stay away from those type of guys.

"Unfortunately at Talladega, all the cars run the same speed all day long. So it's pretty hard to get away from them. But you have to keep your eye on the ones you don't trust and try to distance yourself from them."

Of course, complaining about Talladega is nothing new. Drivers have been upset about the racing conditions at the track for years.

So why doesn't NASCAR do anything about the situation?

"I don't know," Wallace said. "Why don't you call and ask them."

NASCAR officials repeatedly have said they are trying to make the races at Talladega and Daytona International Speedway -- the only other restrictor-plate track -- as safe as possible for the drivers without allowing the speeds to exceed 200 mph.

Officials are concerned that cars would be more likely to flip into the grandstands at the higher speeds, as nearly happened to Bobby Allison's car in 1987 during the pre-plate days. But by decreasing the speeds on a track designed for racing at excess of 200 mph, it is keeping the cars bunched up.

That often creates some of the most exciting racing of the year. And some of the most frightening.

"I hope I win at Talladega. I'm going to give it my all. I'm going to run every single lap wide open," Wallace said. "I just don't like it. And I don't give a ... what anybody thinks.

"I'm sure the fans will be on their feet going nuts. It's what the fans love and the drivers hate."
