Driver quotes about Daytona
ESPN.com news services

Drivers had different thoughts on what happened on lap 149 and whether the new rules package was a factor. Here are some comments made by the drivers:

"I don't know. You saw it more than I did. It felt big to me."
-- Matt Kenseth, when asked if the lap 149 wreck was "the big one" that many expect on superspeedways.

"You always get prepared for this race knowing things can happen to you. There were a lot of cars torn up down there on the bottom of the racetrack. It's unfortunate that that had to happen for a lot of those guys and us, too. But that's generally what happens here."
-- Bobby Labonte, on racing at Daytona.

"It's probably the worst rules package we've had yet. There is no give and take. You cannot let off the throttle. It is brutal to be racing out there."
-- Todd Bodine, talking about the wreck.

"It's the race tracks. They need to fix the race tracks. there's no fix until we can go fast enough and make them handle terrible. That's the only thing that will ever help it. Until then -- we've got to change the race track and figure out how to do that. I applaud them for making a chance because we did last year was wrong. We just need to keep working."
-- Jeff Burton, on the quality of racing at Daytona.

"(It's a) battle of wrecks. That's what you'll have in restrictor-plate races. We do that a lot here. The further it goes the more stuff you'll see. ... It gets wild. People get desperate at the end. I understand that. I was desperate, too."
-- Michael Waltrip, on Daytona being a battle of attrition.

"I don't know. The cars are going so slow. I mean, it feels like you're running 60 mph out there, so everybody feels like a hero and takes a lot of chances. That's the biggest problem, the cars are going too slow."
-- Ricky Rudd, when asked if drivers are taking more chances now.

"I think the aero package is safer than last year. It's separated the cars a little bit. We weren't running three-wide the whole time. That stuff happens every year."
-- Casey Atwood, on the race.

"Smoke. All I was was smoke and I knew it wouldn't be good. I made it through most of the way and got caught at the very end."
-- Ken Schrader when asked what he saw of the Gordon-Harvick incident.
