Check out a short list of favorites for Sunday's UAW-Daimler/Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas.

Johnny Benson

Johnny Benson
The 1995 Busch series champion qualified well at Rockingham last Sunday, but finished a disappointing 23rd place; had one of his better races in Las Vegas last year where he finished fourth; in his seventh Winston Cup season, but still without a victory; started 2002 with a 10th place result at the Daytona 500.

Jeff Burton
Two-time winner at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999 and 2000; last year was out of the picture in 39th; a good start to this season with a 12th-place finish in Daytona and up to sixth last weekend at Rockingham; that puts him in an early fifth place of the Winston Cup standings; only victory last year was recorded in the longest race, the Coca-Cola 600

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Contended for the victory last season until a late pit lane penalty cost a lap and a chance for a top-five finish; in 2000, it marked the first time Dale Jr. led a Winston Cup race outright, leading the field for 41 laps; eventually finished 10th when rain cut the race short; last season he placed in 23rd; the No. 8 Bud Team started this year poorly with finishes lower than 25th at both Daytona and Rockingham.

Bill Elliott
The Winston Cup veteran kicked off his 27th year on the circuit with a pair of 11th-place finishes at both the Daytona 500 and Subway 400 this past Sunday; good performances in 2001, including his first win in seven years, showed he still has some quality driving in him; won the race at Homestead-Miami and also scored nine top-10 placements, five of which were among the top five.

Jeff Gordon
The 2001 Winston Cup and four-time NASCAR champion is also the defending winner of the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; also drove to a third finish at the track in 1999; opened this season with a ninth at Daytona and a little better to a seventh at Rockingham; the results positions him in fourth place of the series' standings; last season's championship puts him in the elite company of Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers to win more than three titles; won six races, six poles, had 18 top-fives, 24 top-10s and collected over $6.5 million in an excellent campaign

Kevin Harvick
Last year's Winston Cup Rookie of the Year had a good race at Las Vegas, coming home in eighth place; more impressive than winning the rookie award was the fact he also ran a full schedule in the Busch Grand National series en route to winning the championship; replaced Dale Earnhardt at Richard Childress Racing and did not disappoint with some solid performances; won races at Atlanta and Chicago, compiled impressive Winston Cup numbers of 16 top-10s, six top-fives including two runners-up, and had only two finishes outside the top 25; ended up ninth in the overall Winston Cup points standings; winner of the 1998 Winston West championship and seven go-kart national titles between the ages of nine and 14.

Dale Jarrett

Led the 43-car field to the green flag and the first 13 laps, was among the top contenders before settling for second place to winner Jeff Gordon; also won the first pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the inaugural 1998 race; last year was a good season with four victories and four poles, but the goal in 2002 is to improve on the fifth place finish in the standings.

Bobby Labonte
The 2000 Winston Cup champion had two fifth-place finishes in Las Vegas, in 1999 from the pole; last Sunday in Rockingham he came from a lap down and post his first top-five finish of the year in third; two victories in the past season were recorded in Atlanta and the Pennsylvania 500; altogether he had 20 top-10 finishes, nine of which among the best five; sixth was the best he could muster in the final points standings following the Atlanta win and a third place in the season finale at New Hampshire.

Sterling Marlin
After his error probably cost him a victory at Daytona, he battled up front all day at Rockingham to come home second behind Matt Kenseth; the outcome puts him first in the Winston Cup points race with 327; feels he's taking a good car to Las Vegas, where last year ran real good to a third place; 2001 was one of his best seasons with victories at Michigan and Lowe's Motor Speedway; scored 20 top-10 finishes including 12 races in the top five; ended third in the points, just 22 points behind Tony Stewart.

Mark Martin
Winner of the inaugural 1998 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; last year he was sixth, placed third in 2000 and 10th in 1999; last season was the first in a long time he went without victory; averaged three wins per season between 1990-2000; finished outside the top-10 in the points standings for the first time in 12 years; had just three top five results, with fourths at Talladega and Coca-Cola 600 as best.

Tony Stewart
Is one of five drivers with an opportunity to cash in on a $1 million bonus if he wins. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Burton, Matt Kenseth and Bobby Hamilton are the others who vie for the big cash bonus due to their top-five finish in last year's EA Sports 500 at Talladega Superspeedway; best finish in Las Vegas for Stewart was second in 2000, while last year was 10 places down in 12th; after his engine failed at Daytona two laps in, he bounced back nicely at Rockingham with a fourth-place finish; trying to avoid another slow start; the end of last year saw him in a great run with 11 top-nine finishes in the last 13 races, including one of his three wins; had 16 top fives, 23 top-10s and earned over $3.5 million.

Rusty Wallace

Last year had a quick end to the race at Las Vegas due to an accident on lap eight, but in 1998 drove to a third place and a year later to eighth; the victory at the NAPA Auto Parts 500 in April extended his streak of winning at least one race to 16 straight years.
