Saturday, May 18 Mayfield, Newman join Winston party Associated Press
CONCORD, N.C. -- Jeremy Mayfield and Ryan Newman won qualifying races Saturday night to advance into The Winston and run for a chance at $750,000. Mayfield led flag-to-flag to win the Winston Open at Lowe's Motor Speedway, a 30-lap race where the winner moves on to NASCAR's all-star event. Newman, a rookie, then won the 16-lap No Bull Sprint to take the other spot in The Winston. Newman was entered in the qualifiers a year ago and was running away with the Open, but blew a motor late in the race and failed to advance. Starting from the pole, Mayfield was never challenged in leading the entire event as he qualified for The Winston for the fifth time in his career. Mayfield also won the Winston Open in 1998. He picked up $54,326 for the win. The race's only glitch came on lap 11, when Carl Long lost control of his Dodge in turn two and backed into the outside wall. Newman, meanwhile, blew past Jeff Green in turn four of the No Bull Sprint to earn the final spot in the field of 27. After a round of pit stops following the Open, Green's pit crew got him out ahead of the field, enabling him to lead the field to the green flag in the Sprint. He opened up a lengthy advantage on the restart, but Newman quickly caught and passed him. Newman never looked back and led the entire 16 laps. Kyle Petty finished second, followed by Ken Schrader , Hut Stricklin and Jimmy Spencer. |
