CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Elliott Sadler was fined $5,000 by NASCAR on Monday for throwing his helmet at Ryan Newman during The Winston.

Sadler was knocked out of Saturday's all-star race at Lowe's Motor Speedway because of an accident, and as he waited to get off the track, he tossed his helmet at Newman as the cars circled by him under caution.

The helmet hit the rear of Newman's car, leaving a dent, but not causing enough damage to prevent the rookie from winning the race.

Sadler later apologized for the incident and said he was angry with Newman over rough racing during the event.

In fining Sadler, NASCAR said the helmet-throwing was "detrimental to stock car racing."
