Dale Earnhardt Jr.
His season struggles continued at the
Brickyard 400 where he finished 22nd after starting third; in
the last 10 races, he has scored only two top-10s; won the
Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, one of his five top-five
results this season; nearly made it into the top 10 at Watkins
Glen last year, but fell short by two spots after starting 27th;
won Busch race at the track in 1999; was not a factor in the
circuit's only other road course event at Sonoma on June 23,
finishing 30th.
Bill Elliott
The veteran is sizzling in the Winston Cup
series, winning two straight races at Pocono and Sunday's
Brickyard 400; won at Indianapolis by a little more than a
second after passing another veteran, Rusty Wallace, with
10 laps remaining; one of six drivers with more than one win
this year; made jump from ninth to sixth in the standings, 210
points out of first place; hopes to carry momentum at Watkins
Glen in his 16th visit to upstate New York; posted a handful of
good results at the track in his career, but has yet to drive to
victory lane; was eighth at the road course event in Sonoma.
Jeff Gordon
One of the best Winston Cup drivers on road
courses over the years; won six consecutive road-course events
until Steve Park won at Watkins Glen in 2000; Gordon won four of
the last five races at the track including last year from
starting 13th; in eight starts at the 2.45-mile track, Gordon
has one pole, four wins, six top-fives and seven top-10s, and
has led 159 laps; winless in 29 races, the longest drought of
his career; remained fourth in the standings, closing the gap to
125 points behind Sterling Marlin; before heading towards
Watkins Glen, he will make his third appearance as co-host on
the popular daytime talk show, "Live with Regis and Kelly" on
Thursday, August 8.

| | Jarrett |
Dale Jarrett
Starting from the pole at Watkins Glen last
year, he led the first 17 laps before spinning out and landing
in one of the tricky road course's sand traps; looking for
redemption, Jarrett will use the same car he won the pole with
last year; also hopes to improve on the 15th place finish put
together in June at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California; best
career finish at Watkins Glen was fourth in 1999 and placed
among the first 10 in 1998 and 2000; although he has put
together four straight good results, still unable to break into
the top 10 in the standings; has been stuck in 11th for the past
six races.
Jimmie Johnson
His 35th place finish at the road course in
Sonoma was just one of three results of 30th or lower; looks to
improve his perfomance on the second road event on the circuit;
the rookie driver moved up to second place in the standings, 93
points behind Sterling Marlin; recorded five top-five finishes
and 13 top-10s; has been the highest finishing rookie 11 times
this year; leads Ryan Newman, 288-281 in the Rookie of the Year
battle.
Bobby Labonte
Shows signs of perhaps turning around a
disappointing season, having finished 11th twice and 13th in the
last three races; has just three top fives all season including
victory at the Virginia 500 and is 18th in the points
standings; was 13th at the road event at Sonoma and ninth at
Watkins Glen last year; in 2000, he led three times but finished
fifth in New York.

| | Marlin |
Sterling Marlin
Despite a 27th place finish at the Brickyard
400, the 26-year veteran reamined in first place for the 20th
consecutive race (Rockingham-Indianapolis); has a 93-point lead
over rookie Jimmie Johnson; the result at Indianapolis was just
his fourth outside the top 20 this season; his worst finish was
last at Sonoma in June when the engine on his Dodge failed after
19 laps of competition.
Mark Martin
A bit of a setback with the 28th place finish at
the Brickyard 400, dropping to third place in the series points
championship; it was only his fifth finish lower than 21st this
season; tied with Jimmie Johnson for most top 10 finishes at 13
each; winless here since he captured three straight from
1993-95; in the past six years since his last win, he has
finished in the top-five four times, including runner-up to
Steve Park in 2000
Steve Park
The New York native recorded his first career
NASCAR Winston Cup victory at his home track in 2000; held off
Mark Martin to lead the final 26 laps; missed four races this
year due to injury an has posted only one top 10.
Ricky Rudd
The win at Sonoma in June was the 23rd of his
career and should be a boost of confidence at this track; has
not finished lower than fourth in the past three road course
events including at Watkins Glen last year (4th); one of 14
winners on the circuit this year; has eight top-10 finishes and
is eighth in the points standings.

| | Stewart |
Tony Stewart
Is just as adept at turning right as he is in
turning left on the ovals of the Winston Cup circuit; proved
that with a victory at Sonoma in 2001 and also the second place
finish last June at t he facility; also was sixth in two starts
at Watkins Glen (1999-2000); was in contention at the Brickyard
400 for much of the race until the car faded back late in the
race to 12th; was quite upset about the outcome afterwards that
he was involved in a physical confrontation with a photographer;
winner of two racs this year, two poles, with eight top-fives
and 11 top-10s; those good results have been countered with five
DNFs and eight finishes of 15th or worse; seventh in the
standings.
Rusty Wallace
Another driver who performs well on road
courses; has six career victories on this type of configuration,
including two at Watkins Glen in 1987 and 1989; most recent top
finish was in 1999 when he started from the pole and was third
behind Jeff Gordon and Ron Fellows; no victories this year yet,
but has been runner-up in two of the past five races including
last Sunday at the Brickyard 400.
