Monday, December 16 Updated: December 23, 12:28 PM ET Comments on Winston Cup drivers ESPN.com ESPN.com spotlighted Winston Cup drivers John Andretti, Casey Atwood, Johnny Benson, Dave Blaney and Brett Bodine. Here's what some of our users had to say about those drivers:
John Andretti
Being a Petty fan I would much rather see Jimmy Spencer in the car. Spencer will push you out of the way if he has too. Andretti waits to get pushed out of the way. Tony Savage New Jersey
I feel bad for John Andretti. The IRL was created, in theory, for drivers with his background and he would rather be at the Indy 500 every year, but instead he has a terrible ride in NASCAR with a second-tier team. Maybe cousin Michael will offer him a ride at Indy. Or perhaps godfather A.J. Foyt. At least the money's good, I guess . Bill Pickard Indianapolis
I was glad to see that John Andretti had signed on with Petty Enterprises for another go in 2003. While 2002 wasn't the season John may have hoped for it was good to see the Petty cars qualifying for races again. All John Andretti needs to have a much improved year is for the team to keep improving on the cars and to have some of that bad luck happen behind him. Ray Van Hoesen Jr. Tivoli, N.Y.
John Andretti has the talent. If he can stay out of the rumor mill for this year, maybe the team can concentrate on the job at hand. If people can stay put and not move around, just maybe better things will come Steven Twiss Milton, Ontario
It's time for John Andretti to go. Adding another year to a dismal performance at Petty Enterprises will only lengthen the time it will take Petty to get back into the hunt. It's time for the Andretti/Petty relationship to end. Chuck Brown Erie, Pa.
Casey Atwood
I feel that Ray Evernham did Casey Atwood wrong when he took him out of the 19 car and put Mayfield in. That situation did not work out and Mayfield did not improve things for that team. I feel Evernham damaged Casey's confidence by putting him in that 7 car. Casey, I feel will end up in the Busch series and will stay there for a couple of years Anitra Dickerson Detroit
Casey has undeniable talent. Even though he was with what many thought was a "dream ride" it really wasn't the right combination. Bill Elliott wasn't the right mentor for Casey. He needs a younger teammate like the Jimmy Johnson/Jeff Gordon combo. Casey will get another shot at Cup maybe before the '03 season is done. Carlin Alford Nashville
Casey definitely needs a few more years back in Busch- he was moved up too soon -- a condition which seems to be happening more and more often because owners want to find the "next Jeff Gordon" -- the owners need to understand that a driver needs to have some consistent success in Busch before giving him a Winston Cup ride. Guys who kicked but in ARCA, the trucks , or some other division does not guarantee that they will run well in cup. Mike Skinner, Ted Musgrave and Mike Bliss are two examples of guys who tore it up in lower divisions who don't seem to have it for Winston Cup. Its easy to be a big fish in a little pond -- but you're swimming with the whales in Winston Cup! Tom Steger Huntington Beach, Calif.
Johnny Benson
I have been a big Johnny Benson fan since his ASA days. He has had success at every level of racing. He certainly deserved his first win, especially when a couple of weeks prior he could have won a race if had chosen to use the "bump and run" method that Jeff Gordon used on Rusty Wallace. With a great sponsor like Valvoline, a seasoned race team, and his natural talent, Johnny Benson is a lock for a Top 10 finish in 2003. Steve Rolfes CIncinnati
I believe that Johnny and James will put that No. 10 Valvoline Pontiac in the top 10 in 2003. They are a very determined team and they have a very loyal fan base to cheer them on. This season was full of ups and downs and that helped them to really dig deep to find that little something extra to put them in Victory Lane. Cathy Rottman Fremont, Mich.
Let's applaud the good guy for a change. For a while, I thought Johnny wasn't ruthless enough to win and that's what it took. My trust in sportsmanship and fair play has been renewed. Dean E. Peterson Ashland, Ky.
Dave Blaney
Having watched Dave Blaney race sprint cars from the start, he has come a long way and he's not done yet. Allan R. Lane Cape Coral, Fla.
You can bet DB has the moxie. If they can get the car to be close off the trailer. Then fine tune, He will do the rest. He is really getting the feel. So come on crew, step up. Frank Kamin Las Vegas
I think Dave can stay consistent and have a chance at a win. He has showed the talent of a winner. He will not be dominate by no means. But I feel if he hits that right setup on the right day. He has the talent and skills to take it to the front. He has middle of the road equipment and has showed many times he can run with the best of them. I can't wait till I hear the day when he gets his nickname back "The Buckeye Bullet." If Jasper can provide them with at least the resources they had last year, we could hear it very soon Ray Isaac Miamisburg, Ohio
Brett Bodine
Alan Kulwicki won a championship as the driver/owner of the Hooters Ford. But he wouldn't be able to do it today. And neither can Bodine. The days of independent drivers having success are over. In regards to technology, equipment and personnel, Bodine is miles behind most of his competitors. Bodine would have trouble winning ARCA races with the cars he used in Cup last season. Kenny Claus Butte, Mont.
Brett Bodine just needs more sponsorship. Or, he should team up with his brothers to create one race team -- seems the three of them are always in search of more sponsor dollars. Garrett Brown Rochester, N.Y. |
