What our users think of proposal
ESPN.com

We shared our take on the proposed playoff system in NASCAR. Here are some user views:

OK, change from consistent to a "playoff system!" But if you do let's start the last 10 races with the starting line up for each race based on the previous week's standing for the top 10 competing for the championship for final 10 races. Everyone else must qualify for the 11th starting position through the field. What do you think?

"To finish First, First you have to finish." Whoever was the first person to utter this axiom knew a hell of a lot more than NASCAR/NEXTEL.

Don't even try to put a spin on a 26 race season followed by an exciting 10 race PLAYOFF SERIES.

But if you must have a champion that has more than one win for the season, just give a little more of the total points available in a race to the winner and less in a proportional amount to the rest of the field. Done. Everybody is happy -- unless there is an underlying aspect or theme to this whole ridiculous 10 race season, that won't even see the most famous and well balanced racing that goes on during a 36 race season. It is not that I am against change, I'm against stupidity. A perfect analogy to this sham is to tear down Daytona -- level it flat -- from the parking lot, seats, track, pits, infield -- everthing -- and rebuild it with no improvements, just because the track needs restriping -- the white and yellow paint is faded. Just restructure the points minimally.

Out of curiousity, if Jimmie Johnson hadn't had that three race run of bad luck in the early part of the season and had won them, how would the top 10 look like?

One wonders how the sponsors are going to react when they find that their car or driver is an " also ran " and is not included in the top 10. Are they all going to be overjoyed and still continue supporting the teams? Or are they going to cut back on their funding for the year?

I love the idea and your article about the points system in NASCAR. I've been a fan for about 30 years, so I think it would be more interesting for the fans. It may even bring in new fans to the sport but I'd hate to be the driver in 11th place closing in on 10th place. It would pay to be the best for the first 26 races, so no sandbagging with the points lead will happen.

The thought of a playoff system is a joke. You think the big teams have problems keeping sponsors now? Think about when their drivers are just riding around for the last 10 races. As good as Hendrick, Roush, Gibbs, DEI and Childress are, you would see a lot of those drivers out of the playoffs.

Why not just give a driver 5 points for a pole and 25 (or 50, or 100) points for a win. Then you don't have the same deal going on next year as last year, with Kenseth taking the last 4 weeks off. Isn't running as fast as you can and winning races what it's all about, anyway?

With the consideration of the new championship format, is NASCAR likewise considering realigning the schedule so that the championship is decided on the best 10 tracks or the best cross section? I mean, start at New Hampshire? Give me a break. Daytona, Bristol, Richmond and road courses will have no participation in the 'playoff'? Doesn't seem like it would be a holistic championship does it?

NASCAR's playoff idea is idiotic. In the NFL and everywhere else, the non-playoff teams are eliminated from competing. Not so in NASCAR. Or, a guy wins 26 of 36 races and is punished with a 10th place finish. Possible in the new NASCAR. Those guys are idiots. Just make first and second place worth, say, 50 and 25 points more than the other finishers. And no points for 30 on down. Idiots.

The 'NASCAR Playoff' idea is refreshing, yet daring! A solution to the even parity after 26 races is simple: Reset the top driver to 250 points, second to 225 points, third = 200, and so on to 10th at 25 points. This would be the 'seeding'; the top driver earned his spot while the 10th place guy has 10 races to make up the difference. This way there's no argument in fairness!

I suppose those drivers who are racing but not part of the "shoot-out" will just always move over and let the "top-l0" guys roar past. Yeah, sounds exciting. A really bad idea. Just award four times the points for first place and you'll see some good racing for first. The "consistency" arguement is putting us fans asleep. Sick of the drivers "...we did good, got a top ten..' Puke.

Perhaps the sprint to the title could be improved if the top 15 or top 20 are included instead of the top 10. This makes more sponsors happy, and allows for the possibility of a Kurt Busch-type situation to be rewarded.
