Still working out the kinks

Even though my statistics say otherwise, I really like racing at Atlanta. I used to say that I wish they never changed it from the old configuration to a tri-oval. When they first changed it, it was bad but right now it's one of the best speedways to go to. It's got two distinctive grooves -- a low groove and a high groove. It's a fast track. It's awesome to race on.

I really think there should be a night race there. A night race in July or August would be more appropriate for the type of weather they have. They've had terrible weather there for the last four or five years during race weekend and it has really hurt them. Luckily, we had good weather this weekend.

Fox Sports Net's "Victory Lane -- All Access" show followed Team Target around this weekend. It was pretty cool to give fans a behind the scenes look at our team. The guys work really hard on the cars and don't always get the credit they deserve from the media. The driver is always in the spotlight but I wouldn't be here without this crew.

We started the Target Dodge in the fifth position for the 500-mile race. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the race I could tell that the car needed some work. During pit stops, Doug Randolph and the Target crew made air pressure and track bar adjustments to try to loosen the car up. We couldn't get it as good as I wanted and had to settle for a disappointing 26th-place finish.

We had a collision on pit road that didn't help much, either. The Target Dodge collided with the No. 18 of Bobby Labonte on pit road, spinning him and creating right front fender damage on our car. That collision pretty much killed us. We had to come in again to fix the damage and we lost a lot of ground.

The guys worked hard on the car all day, we just couldn't get it right. I'm looking forward to going to Darlington next weekend to try and get this Target Dodge running well. I know we have the potential with our team, we just seem to be working out new team kinks.

Jimmy Spencer is the driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T. He will be providing a regular diary to ESPN.com throughout the Winston Cup season.
