Jimmy Spencer
Good cars, bad luck

I really enjoy racing at Richmond, especially under the lights. We've won the past two Busch races there with the No. 1 Yellow team. You always have confidence when you go back to the tracks where you've won. I've been so close to winning at Richmond on the Winston Cup side. Richmond is exciting for the fans. It's good short-track racing.

I think the night races at Richmond are awesome. It brings a whole different aspect to the sport, from both the drivers' perspective and the fans' perspective. The cars look nicer under the lights. And I don't know how other drivers feel about it, but I think I can see better under the lights. You can't necessarily see the track better, but you can see the other cars. That's another neat thing about racing under the lights.

We started 27th in the No. 1 Yellow car for Friday night's Busch race. There's no question in my mind that we were the car to beat in that race. We were running in second when we came into pit and when leaving the pit box the rear end broke and ended our day. We ended up 32nd. Someone told me that Bobby Hamilton Sr., radioed his son and said 'Now that the No. 1 is out, you can win this thing!' Our car was fast, and we were the team to beat but that's been the type of luck we've had lately.

Even though I was unhappy with our qualifying run in the Target Dodge, we raced a lot better than I did in the Busch race. We made some changes before qualifying to go faster and we went a lot slower. We were real tight in practice. We made a calculated adjustment, but it was calculated the wrong way. We had to take a provisional and start in 41st position for the race.

In the Winston Cup race on Saturday night, the Target Dodge ran well and moved up through the pack pretty good before they red flagged the race due to rain. We restarted in the top-10 on Sunday and raced up front all day. We lead quite a few laps before we got tangled up there with Jimmie Johnson and that put us back. Jimmie just made a little mistake there. I came up a little bit off turn two and he got a run at me. It put us in a bad position. We lost the lead then and had to pit because we flat spotted our tires. That dropped us back and we ended our day with a 10th place finish.

Overall, Team Target had a good day. We were a little tight all day, but I guess everybody was. We had a car capable of winning the race and a top-10 is all we got out of it. Track position was critical. Lapped cars were tough to pass, but I can't complain.

Our pit stops are awesome. Andy Graves and Tony Glover and my guys do whatever it takes for this team to be successful. I can't say enough about Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates. All the Target people out there keep your thumbs up because this car is going to get in the winner's circle before long.

Jimmy Spencer is the driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T. He will be providing a regular diary to ESPN.com throughout the Winston Cup season.
