2002 recap
The good: Wallace was able to land a full-time ride with Bill Davis for 2003, partly due to his driving ability and partly due to the fact that he brought a sponsor along with him. Wallace also got a leg up on other new driver-team combos by finishing the 2002 season with BDR.

  • Season highlight: Wallace's 10th-place finish in the second race of the year at Rockingham, N.C., was his best result of the season, but it came while filling in for the then-injured Steve Park in the No. 1 DEI car. Perhaps more significant was Wallace's 11th-place at Phoenix in the second to last race of the year, because it came in the No. 23 car he'd be driving in 2003 -- a sign of good things to come?

The bad: Not that he was hoping Park wouldn't return, but Wallace had proved down the stretch in 2001 that he deserved a solid Winston Cup ride. Suddenly, but expectedly, he found himself without any full-time deal after Park recovered from his concussion.

  • Season lowlight: The Pepsi 400 at Daytona. Wallace started a strong 15th but lasted just 57 laps before his day was cut short by an accident.

Key stat: Wallace finished strong in 2002, notching five top-20s in his final 10 starts. He also qualified in the top-10 in each of his last two starts. Before that, a 16th-place starting position at Rockingham was his only starting spot better than 26th in the 12 races since the Pepsi 400.

    2003 outlook
What needs to be done: If the team can take what it learned late last year and combine that with what the No. 22 team picked up during an up and down 2002 campaign, it should be in position for a solid season. Plus, the Dodge program needs to be up to speed with the rest of the manufacturers.

Prediction: BDR driver Ward Burton suffered through a tough '02 campaign after winning the season-opening Daytona 500, but Burton eventually won another race last season and did finish strong, save for a few accidents costing him chances at solid finishes. Combine that with Wallace's strong showings with his new team late in the season, and 2003 turns into a promising year for Wallace. An overall top-20 isn't at all out of the question, while a top-15 might be within reach.

    Your take
Is this Kenny Wallace's year to finally establish himself as one of NASCAR's best? Or will he continue to be a journeyman in Winston Cup racing? Here are your thoughts on Wallace's prospects for the 2003 season.
