2002 recap
The good: Mark Martin rebounded from a 2001 season which ended in his first sub-top-10 points finish since 1989. Even though Martin won only one race, he was consistent and a title contender from start to finish -- shutting up all hacks who questioned whether he was past his prime.

  • Season highlight: Winning the Coca-Cola 600, as far as on-track performance goes. Off the track, however, he shone as bright as the champion, himself, when he lost the title to Tony Stewart. He was gracious and grateful in defeat.

The bad: The defeat would be the bad part. Despite three straight top-fives (five straight top-10s), Martin was unable to overcome Stewart, and the penalty NASCAR imposed on him late in the year.

  • Season lowlight: That penalty. Martin, who was docked points when he lost the title to Dale Earnhardt in 1990, was so low after NASCAR deemed the springs on his car to be illegal that he questioned whether the governing body would ever let him win a title. Unlike in 1990, though, he lost this title by more than the amount of the penalty -- which was some consolations.

    Mark Martin
Martin needs to pick up a few more wins in 2003.

Key stat: 30. That's the age of Martin's young crew chief Ben Leslie. After the 2001 season, which saw the other three Roush teams join Martin in a slump, teammates Jeff Burton and Martin came up with a plan where Martin's crew chief at the time, Jimmy Fennig, would go over to teammate Kurt Busch's team and Busch's crew chief at the time, Leslie, would come over to Martin's side. The move rejuvenated Martin's team with an infusion of youth, and gave the Busch the calming, patient chief he needed -- which helped vault him to a third-place points finish.

    2003 outlook
What needs to be done: More of the same. Martin's one victory was not among the season's best. His 12 top-fives and 22 top-10s were not among the season's best, either. But he stayed out of trouble and finished outside the top-20 in only eight races. This year, Martin could use another victory or two, as well as more careful measurements on all parts before entering a race.

Prediction: Martin is nowhere near past his prime. He owns the distinction of being the winningest Winston Cup driver without a title, but look for him to make a strong case for changing that in 2003.

    Your take
Can Martin put together another title-contending season, or was 2002 one last gasp in his already brilliant career? Here are your thoughts on Martin's prospects for 2003.
