Tuesday, January 6 Updated: February 13, 12:15 PM ET Dale Jarrett By Rupen Fofaria Special to ESPN.com
The good: The first two races of the year. That's when Jarrett posted finishes of 10th and first and sat second in points. With new teammate Elliott Sadler and new crew chief Brad Parrott, it looked like Jarrett's fast start might just be the beginning of a championship-chasing season. How wrong those appearances were. The bad: It took Jarrett four races to fall to 20th in the standings. By year's end, nine DNFs and five other races in which he finished 30th or worse conspired to hand Jarrett and the 88 team its worst ever season together. Key stat: 23.8. That was Jarrett's average finish -- his worst average in more than 10 years.
2004 outlook
Key change: Eddie D'Hondt was hired in late October to assume the role of general manager for Robert Yates Racing and Mike Ford and Barry Swift, both part of Jarrett's 1999 Winston Cup Championship team, rejoined Yates as crew chief and shop foreman, respectively. Prediction: With Ford calling the shots, Jarrett has got yet another crew chief -- but this one is a heady, gutsy chief who has the potential to get the cars competitive again. And Jarrett hasn't lost anything as a driver. He'll bounce back. Did you know: Jarrett turned down a full scholarship to play golf at the University of South Carolina in order to go racing full time.
