Friday, January 16 Updated: February 13, 12:10 PM ET Mark Martin By Rupen Fofaria Special to ESPN.com
The good: The first half of the season was solid for Martin. Although it wasn't exactly picking up where he left off during his runner-up season of 2002, Martin overcame some engine troubles and held his ground at 10th in the standings through 15 races - including notching his season-best second-place finish at Pocono. The bad: But the 6 team didn't exactly stay the course. In the season's last 21 races, Martin finished in the top 15 only six times. There was frustration and disappointment, but not concession. Martin remained determined to bounce back, refusing to let championship hopes die. He finished 11th at Charlotte and 10th at Phoenix late in the year. But those performances were more than cancelled out by two failed engines and a wreck. Key stat: 4. That's how many engine failures Martin had in 2003.
2004 outlook
Guarantee: Guarantee: Martin is now a champion. Well, a championship owner. But you can guarantee that a driver champion is what Martin's really after. Prediction: Martin will bounce back. His first title in 2004? With so much competition these days, that's a hard prediction to make. Still, Martin has got the talent, the team and the funding to make a run any year. With the right kind of luck ... Did you know: Martin grew up on quarter-midgets and has found it hard to leave behind. His company, Mark Martin Performance, sells quarter-midget chassis and he owns a short-track for quarter-midget racing in New Smyrna, Fla.
