TORONTO -- Elvis Stojko's nagging heel injury has forced the
three-time world champion to pull out of another Grand Prix figure
skating event.
Stojko, 28, who withdrew from Skate Canada event
because of Achilles tendinitis in his left heel, also pulled out of
the NHK Grand Prix, which is scheduled from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.
That means Stojko has no chance to qualify for the lucrative
Grand Prix final in Tokyo. Skaters need points from two Grand Prix
events to qualify for the final.
Stojko plans to skate in his only Grand Prix of the season on
Nov. 23 at the Lalique Trophy in Paris. But given the nature of his
injury, even that is up in the air.
"The problem with tendinitis is that you have to be careful on
the rebound because you can tear it quickly if it isn't fully
healed," Skate Canada director-general David Dore said Sunday.
"Then you can do irreparable damage. They're trying to make sure
he's absolutely prepared (before he skates)."
