Sassy, energetic new style captures pairs title

BOSTON -- All Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman had to do was stand up and the title was theirs. Instead, they put on the only performance actually worthy of a national crown.

While everyone else was stumbling and bumbling, Ina and Zimmerman unveiled a sassy, energetic new style Friday night as they won their second straight pairs title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman dazzled the crowd and judges to win their second straight national championship.
They swept the judges, who were eager to finally do something with the 5.8s they'd been holding onto all night.

Tiffany Scott and Philip Dulebohn were second. Danielle and Steve Hartsell, the leaders after the short program, dropped to third and likely off the world team.

The Hartsells had a tough week, with Steve needing a dozen stitches after falling during practice. But it was Danielle's crashes that cost the siblings Friday.

She fell on their side-by-side triple toe loops. Their next jump was side-by-side double axels, and she went down again. She took so long getting up that she missed the next jump, a double toe loop.

Though they had some nice spins and intricate lifts - on one, Danielle flipped over after Steve picked her up, so she was upside down and they were back-to-back - Steve knew it wouldn't be good enough.

As their music ended, he buried his head on her shoulder.

That gave Ina and Zimmerman a wide open shot at the title, but they didn't play it safe. They opened with huge side-by-side triple toes and quickly followed it with double axels.

Their program was filled with innovative moves better-suited for the international field than the paltry U.S. competition. As Zimmerman did a spread-eagle, Ina raised her leg and put it over his shoulders, drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd.

Their carry lift was even more breathtaking. Zimmerman swung her up and over his head, pushing her up until her head was resting on his shoulder and the rest of her body was going straight up. As if that wasn't difficult enough, he did it all while executing a spread-eagle.

The couple had only two mishaps, and they were very minor. Ina had to bend deep to save the landing on a throw triple loop and then quickly stepped out.

In the final seconds of the program, they got out of sync and lost their balance as they went from a death spiral into a spin. She wobbled and he bobbled, but they somehow managed to pull off the final spin.

As the music ended, the normally reserved Ina broke into a smile and started laughing. She then turned to Zimmerman and they hugged, champions again.
