Carroll now coaching two world-level skaters

Associated Press

BOSTON - - Coaching the best woman figure skater in the world isn't enough for Frank Carroll. Now, he also works with American super jumper Tim Goebel.

Some coaches dream about discovering one champion. Carroll, who also has worked with Linda Fratianne and Christopher Bowman in a Hall of Fame career, has been three-time world champion Kwan's coach for more than a decade. He only joined with Goebel last year.

Frank Carroll and Michelle Kwan
Coach Frank Carroll has been a primary reason in Kwan's success.

Kwan, despite a sore back, is a strong favorite to win her fifth U.S. Figure Skating Championship this week and her fourth in a row. Goebel, who has a strained knee ligament, is one of three top contenders for the men's title.

"It has not been hard for me," Carroll said Tuesday, several hours before the championships began with ice dancing compulsories. "They don't skate a lot at the same time. They have only one session together.

"Usually Michelle likes to skate first and Tim likes to go second, so that's great that there are no squabbles over that. They don't feel pulled with my attention. Each gets 30 minutes in that session. It's not like they are vying for my time or feeling competitive."

Kwan, who also is a part-time student at UCLA, never has felt threatened by Carroll taking on other students. And why should she - Kwan is the meal ticket.

"Frank and I have such a strong relationship and friendship," she has said. "He knows what I need and I know what he wants."

Goebel's addition to Carroll's stable came last summer after Goebel's relationship with former coach Carol Heiss Jenkins soured. While he might be the most dynamic leaper in the world - he normally does three quadruple jumps in his free skate - Goebel was not progressing well enough in other areas, particularly artistry.

Timothy Goebel
This is the first year Timothy Goebel has worked with Carroll.

Of course, his unwillingness to concentrate on improving those areas was at the core of his problems. Although he was third at the 1999 nationals and second last year, Goebel never has been a factor at the world championships. International judges, while impressed by his quads and other athletic moves, found him too stiff and unexpressive.

"His coaches were excellent and really provided him with all the skills before he came to me," Carroll said. "Maybe he did not focus on the other side of skating until he had to, and when he came to me, it became the main focus.

"I think he has improved a lot, but it's not what I want yet. He needs to keep going. I'd like to see him do different programs next year that are way out there and over the top and controversial, perhaps. I think he is ready for that."

Goebel likes Carroll's consistency as a coach. Naturally, consistency is something Carroll is eager to see in Goebel.

"Every day he has the same demeanor," Goebel said. "He doesn't yell or scream or go off the deep end. He has certain expectations, whether you're in juvenile ladies or Michelle Kwan. If you don't fulfill those expectations, your lesson is over."

The best aspect of Goebel's moving to the Los Angeles area to train with Carroll is being on the ice with Kwan. Carroll believes the 20-year-old Goebel, who is two months younger than Kwan, can't help but benefit from the inspirational work habits of the world champion.

"I think it's helped Tim," Carroll said. "Michelle is the consummate type of disciplined athlete. I've seen her fall flat on her face on the first two jumps and get up and pick it up and go all the way through the program without missing a beat. That is very difficult to do.

"It's good for him to see that kind of discipline. It always amazes me when you see skaters around Michelle and they don't pick up on it. My God, don't you learn from that?"
