KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Igor Simutenkov scored twice as the
Kansas City Wizards beat New England 3-2 Saturday night.
Simutenkov, playing in his fifth game since joining the Wizards
(4-4-5) last month, scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd
minute, beating New England goalkeeper Adin Brown on a penalty
kick.
The Revolution (4-7-1) evened the score two minutes later when
defender Jay Heaps sent a Joe Franchino pass into the Wizards goal.
"That's the most vulnerable you are, five minutes after you
score,'' Wizards goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi said. "They capitalized on
it, and maybe we had a little bit of a lull. Jay Heaps had a good
goal.''
Kansas City took the lead again in the 30th minute when
Simutenkov scored his second. Five minutes later, defender Carey
Talley slotted a cross from Preki into the Revolution's net.
Kansas City coach Bob Gansler had initially played Simutenkov
along with the recently acquired Dario Fabbro. The Argentine
forward did not play Saturday, however, after scoring only two
goals this season.
Preki's assist in the 35th minute put him in sole possession of
the MLS scoring record with 212 points, passing recently released
Wizards forward Roy Lassiter.
Despite sloppy play by both teams, Kansas City clearly dominated
the first half, outshooting New England nine to six.
The most exciting goal of the game came in the 66th minute when
rookie forward Taylor Twellman launched a bicycle kick past
Oshoniyi.
"When you're on fire like he is, those type of goals go in all
the time,'' Oshoniyi said. "At least it wasn't the game winner.
We'll take the three points, and he can have his bicycle kick.''
