WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jay Heaps' first-half goal gave New England a
1-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night, and the Revolution
extended United's scoreless streak to three games.
United (6-11-2) has not scored in 331 minutes -- since Bobby
Convey's tally in the 39th minute against Columbus on July 13 -- and
has the worst offense in the league with just 19 goals in 19 games.
New England (7-12-1) has the worst defense in the league and has
allowed 11 goals in its last three games, but United were unable to
break through.
D.C. was so desperate for offense that Eddie Pope, a defender
for his entire career with United and the U.S. national team, was
substituted in the 78th minute to play striker.
Heaps scored his second goal of the season in the 16th minute,
deflecting a shot off of United defender Ivan McKinley into the
right corner of the net.
United tried numerous new players on offense and had excellent
chances to score throughout the game, tallying 18 shots.
Salvadoran forward Eliseo Quintanilla, signed earlier in the
week by D.C., started his first game.
Ben Olsen, who has not played for United since August 16, 2000
because of ankle injuries, was brought into the game at halftime to
play forward. Both created opportunities but neither was able to
score.
When Pope entered the game for Olsen, United moved its entire
team into New England's half of the field, but Revolution
goalkeeper Aidan Brown remained strong.
Brown finished the game with seven saves and his second shutout
of the season -- both against D.C.
In the 89th minute, D.C. believed it had a sure penalty kick
when New England defender Joe Franchino appeared to get his hand on
a cross inside the penalty box, but no call was made.
