CARY, N.C. (AP) -- Birgit Prinz scored her sixth goal in seven
games and was involved in two others as the Carolina Courage beat
the San Diego Spirit 3-0 Saturday night.
First-half goals from defender Danielle Slaton and Prinz gave
Carolina (8-2-3) a 2-0 lead. Slaton's goal came off a free kick by
Hege Riise following a foul on Prinz.
Danielle Fotopolous finished off San Diego (2-7-3) with her
eighth goal of the season, assisted by Prinz in the 68th minute.
Carolina outshot San Diego 13-11 as goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill
notched her second shutout of the year.
Winless in five games, the Spirit was shut out for the fourth
time this season and the third time in five games.
Riise tied the WUSA season record for assists at 10 with the
free kick she served to Slaton in the 19th minute. Slaton outjumped
San Diego's Fan Yunjie and headed the ball behind keeper Jaime
Pagliarulo for a 1-0 lead.
Pagliarulo has given up two or more goals eight times in 12
games.
Prinz helped set up her own goal in the 29th minute on a
give-and-go to Katie Barnes, who fed Tiffany Roberts at the top of
the penalty area. Roberts slid the ball across to the streaking
Prinz, who buried it.
On a second-half fast break, Prinz tried to loop the ball into
the penalty area. It glanced off Fan to a wide-open Fotopolous, who
patiently picked her spot to beat Pagliarulo.
San Diego was without injured Shannon MacMillan (sprained foot).
The Spirit's best scoring chance came in the 63rd minute when
Zhang Ouying took a pass from Jen Mascaro behind the Carolina
defense and chipped a shot over the goal from about six yards away.
