CARY, N.C. (AP) -- Hege Riise scored on a rebound of her own shot
in the 88th minute to give the Carolina Courage a 2-1 victory over
the San Jose CyberRays on Thursday night and sole possession of
first place in the WUSA.
Riise fired almost point-blank at goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene, who
stopped the shot. The ball rebounded directly back to Riise, who
kicked it over the prone Beene for her fifth goal of the season,
giving Carolina its fourth straight win.
Birgit Prinz's seventh goal of the season gave Carolina (9-2-3)
a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. She was assisted by Danielle
Fotopolous, giving both a point in their eighth consecutive game, a
WUSA record.
San Jose (5-5-3) answered in the 48th minute when Tisha
Venturini-Hoch scored on a header for her third goal of the season.
San Jose's Danielle Borgman left the game in the 38th minute
after jamming her left leg in pursuit of a loose ball.
