Beat's playoff plans put on hold

ATLANTA (AP) -- Julie Foudy beat U.S. World Cup teammate Briana Scurry on a header in the 46th minute as the San Diego Spirit beat the Atlanta Beat 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The Beat, who needed a victory to clinch a playoff spot, lost their second straight game.

Atlanta (10-8-1), which holds a two-point edge over San Jose (8-7-5) for the final WUSA playoff slot, can secure a postseason berth with a victory Saturday at home against league-leading Philadelphia, or a San Jose loss or tie at Boston on Saturday.

Sun Wen and Homare Sawa each had shots hit the crossbar for Atlanta, which beat San Diego 2-0 and 4-1 in two previous meetings.

Carly Smolak made four saves for her second shutout.
