PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Amado Guevara scored in the third minute
of the second overtime Wednesday night to give the MetroStars a 2-1
victory over the New England Revolution in the quarterfinals of the
U.S. Open Cup.
The MetroStars broke through off a corner kick by Mike Magee.
Eddie Pope collected the kick and fired a shot at New England
goalkeeper Adin Brown, who made the stop on Pope's shot and a
rebound attempt by defender Steve Jolley. But Guevara stormed into
the box to knock in the rebound.
Clint Mathis scored for the MetroStars, his first goal since
July 2 when he scored twice in a tie with San Jose. The MetroStars
are 22-0-4 in games when Mathis scores a goal.
The MetroStars will face D.C. United, which defeated the
Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads 1-0 Wednesday, in the tournament
semifinals Tuesday Sept. 23, also at Rutgers University.
That game will begin a string where the MetroStars and D.C.
United play three times in a span of five days, with regularly
scheduled MLS games slated for Sept. 25 at Giants Stadium and Sept.
28 in Washington.
After Mathis gave the MetroStars a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute
with a left-footed shot from 20 yards out that slid past Brown, New
England countered in the final minute of the first half on a goal
by Jay Heaps off a scramble in front of the net.
Four MetroStars defenders failed to clear the ball out of their
zone, and Heaps pounced on the loose ball and pounded home a shot
from 16 yards out.
