Arsene Wenger: English clubs must improve in Europe to save UCL spot

Arsene Wenger says that Premier League clubs have a duty to "repair" results in Europe amid talk of the division's fourth Champions League spot being under threat from Serie A.

Four Premier League sides can currently qualify for Europe's elite club competition, but that could soon be limited to three depending on how Italian teams fare in European competition compared to their English counterparts this season.

Wenger believes that, following a week in which Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United all lost in the Champions League, English clubs, including those competing in the Europa League, need to start improving upon their results.

"It is a possibility that we will have to repair in the coming months," he told a news conference.

"It's not only the Champions League teams who are involved in that, it's Europa League teams as well.

"We have suffered from the Europa League teams not having taken the competition seriously recently as well."

Wenger was also asked during the news conference about his rivalry with Jose Mourinho ahead of Saturday's game against Chelsea, although the Gunners boss refused to be drawn into reopening a war of words with the Portuguese.
