Zlatan & AC Milan 'made a big statement' in draw (1:19)

Gab Marcotti credits Zlatan Ibrahimovic for not dwelling on his penalty miss in Milan's draw vs. Hellas Verona. (1:19)

Club football is taking a fortnight's hiatus starting Monday, and boy, did it put on a show before doing so.

In the Premier League, a high-speed chess match of a game between Liverpool and Manchester City ended 1-1 while Aston Villa rolled into the Emirates and steamrolled Arsenal 3-0. Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur both won 1-0 (beating Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, respectively) and are currently one-two at the top of the table.

In Serie A, last-minute drama saw Lazio draw Juventus 1-1 (yes, Cristiano Ronaldo scored Juve's only goal), and AC Milan salvage their unbeaten run against high-flying Hellas Verona (2-2). In La Liga, Real Madrid were thrashed 4-1 by Valencia at the Mestalla. Across these matches, there was enough VAR drama to fill the plots of a dozen telenovelas.

By the Numbers brings you the best stats from Sunday's action:

Premier League

0

Sunday was the first time Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played 90 minutes in a Premier League home game without attempting a shot.

1

Kevin De Bruyne's penalty is the first to miss the target completely in a PL game since October 2018, when in the same fixture at Anfield, Riyad Mahrez smashed one over the bar.

3

Aston Villa are just the third side in the PL era to win each of their first three away games in a season without conceding a goal -- after Chelsea in 2005-06 and Manchester City in 2015-16.

7

This is Pep Guardiola's worst start to a season in his managerial career. After the first seven games of a season, he's never had lower points (12), fewer wins (3) or fewer goals scored (10).

8

Leicester City have been awarded eight penalties after only eight PL matches this season. The previous earliest a side had won their eighth penalty of the campaign was 16 matches - Manchester United last season.

9

Arsenal have scored just nine goals in eight PL games this season; their fewest at this stage of a league campaign since 1998-99, when they also managed just nine.

18

Leicester have won 18 points in their opening eight PL games (six wins, two losses) - this is their best ever start to a top-flight season. And their best start to a season since winning 19 points in 2008/09 in League One.

19

An odd one -- Gabriel Jesus' equaliser for Man City saw the most number of passes (19) in the build up to a PL goal against Liverpool since September 2017. Who scored then? Gabriel Jesus, assisted by De Bruyne, at the Etihad, the goal coming after 19 passes.

19 years, 64 days

Bukayo Saka is the fourth-youngest player to score an own goal in the PL era, and youngest since Southampton's Martin Cranie in May 2004 (17 years, 218 days vs. Chelsea).

150

Only Alan Shearer (212) and Sergio Aguero (217) scored their 150th PL goal in fewer appearances than Harry Kane, who hit the mark in his 218th match on Sunday.

Serie A

3

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has missed the most penalties in all competitions (among teams in Europe's top five leagues) so far this season, having missed three.

5

Since the start of last season, Felipe Caicedo has scored the most goals (five), from the 90th minute on in Serie A.

6

Ibrahimovic ties Francesco Totti and Claudio Pizarro for the most goals by a player over the age of 39 in Europe's top five leagues and UEFA competitions in the last 10 seasons. He's scored six since turning 39 on October 3.

7

Ibrahimovic is the first player to score in seven consecutive Serie A appearances for AC Milan in the three-points-per-win era (i.e. since 1994-95).

8

Ibrahimovic leads Serie A with eight goals this season, two more than anyone else.

10

Only two people have scored 10+ goals in three of Europe's top-five leagues since 2015-16. Ibrahimovic and Sunday's hat-trick hero, Henrikh Mkhitaryan (AS Roma eased past Genoa 3-1).

34

AC Milan have never lost a home match against Hellas Verona across all competitions, since their first such game in 1923 (19 wins, 15 draws).

La Liga

1/6

Real Madrid have won just one of their last six La Liga matches without Casemiro (three losses, two draws).

2

Raphael Varane has scored two own goals in his last five games for Real Madrid in all competitions, as many as he had in his previous 324 matches.

3

It was a bad night out for Madrid's defenders. While Varane scored the own goal, the others (Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Lucas Vazquez) all gave away penalties. And all three of them were put away by Carlos Soler. He is, in fact, the first player to score three penalty goals in the same La Liga match in the 21st century.

3

Soler is also the first non-Barcelona player (hello, Messi!) to score a La Liga hat-trick against Real Madrid since Xabi Prieto for Real Sociedad in January 2013.

Messi-Ronaldo watch

4

Ronaldo has scored in each of his first four Serie A games this season. In the three-points-per-win era, only one other Juventus player has found the net in his first four games of a season - Paolo Dybala in 2017/18.
