Fabian Johnson confirms Gladbach contract talks and eyes injury return

Fabian Johnson has confirmed that he is in talks over a new Borussia Monchengladbach contract as he nears a comeback after eight matches out with injury.

U.S. international Johnson, 29, suffered a thigh injury as Gladbach went out of the Europa League to Schalke in March, returning to training earlier this week.

The midfielder hopes to help his team back into the competition next season as they look to seal a qualifying place in the last three Bundesliga games.

"We at least need seven points for Europe," he told reporters ahead of the weekend's home match against Augsburg.

"Everything's at stake for Augsburg. It won't be an easy match for us."

He said the prospect of a return to action after the injury "looks pretty good," but added: "The coach and the medical staff will make the call."

With his current deal expiring in 2018, Johnson said he wanted to ensure he stayed at Borussia Park.

"It's no secret we're in talks. I feel good here, and I also hope [sporting director] Max Eberl is satisfied with my work here," he said.
