Chelsea's David Luiz will play as a centre-back - Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte has confirmed that he plans to use deadline day signing David Luiz at centre-back in his second spell at Chelsea.

Luiz, who finalised a shock return to Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint-Germain last week, has often been deployed in midfield during his career.

The Brazilian has pledged to play anywhere for Conte but Chelsea's head coach, who sanctioned the signing after being frustrated in his pursuit of several defensive targets from Serie A, insists that he wants his new arrival in his more traditional role.

"I think David Luiz is a centre-back, he's played a lot of games in that position," Conte told ChelseaTV. "I know sometimes he's played as a central midfielder but in my mind the idea is to utilise him in the right position which, for me, is centre-back. He's played with Chelsea previously and he will bring a good personality."

Chelsea further bolstered Conte's defensive options on deadline day by completing a £23 million deal for left-back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina, and the Italian says he will waste no time in introducing the new arrivals to his defensive strategy ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

"We reached our targets, David Luiz and Marcos Alonso are two good signings for us," Conte added. "Now we have to work with them because I think they can improve our squad.

"We need to put them into our idea of football. Now we must work on our defensive situation and with the defensive line. We need to improve our physical and tactical condition.

"After the international break it's always very tough to restart because many players don't arrive back until the end of the week, but we must quickly find our concentration and be focused because we know we play a tough game against Swansea and we want to prepare in the best way."
