St Etienne fall just short of CL

St Etienne finished a fine season with a convincing victory over relegated Ajaccio but will have to settle for Europa League football after Lille won 4-1 at Lorient to secure the final Champions League berth.
Although there will be disappointment at falling two points short of the bigger goal, St Etienne can reflect on an excellent campaign after securing their 20th victory.
Loic Perrin bagged a brace either side of Mevlut Erding's goal but the outstanding Max-Alain Gradel missed a penalty before Issa Baradji and Ajaccio bid farewell to the top flight with a goal deep in stoppage time.
As might have been predicted given their relative form, St Etienne dominated proceedings and created a string of chances.
Erding had the first two, seeing an early volley blocked by Guillermo Ochoa before being denied again when through one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Perrin broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, heading home a superb cross from Gradel on the left.
Erding was frustrated again soon after when Benjamin Corgnet picked him out unmarked but the header was straight at the goalkeeper.
However, he got his goal 10 minutes before the break, turning home Gradel's cross.
This effectively settled the match as a contest, with far fewer chances in the second half.
Ochoa denied Erding once more in the 54th minute, but that was about it until Perrin scrambled home the third after Gradel's corner sparked chaos in the Ajaccio area.
Four minutes later they had a penalty when Grenddy Perozo felled Erding, but Gradel's shot hit a post.
Ajaccio sparked into life just as the match was finishing, with Stephane Ruffier blocking Paul Lasne's shot before Baradji fired in from close range.

                                    Sochaux remain alive

Sochaux's great run of form continued with a 2-1 victory at Rennes but they remain in the Ligue 1 relegation zone with one more match to go.
Herve Renard's men took the lead in the 34th minute through Jordan Ayew and after Paul-Georges N'Tep equalised in the 73rd, fellow substitute Emmanuel Mayuka restored the advantage five minutes later.
Sochaux are now unbeaten in seven games, have won four of their last five and are up to 40 points.
They were unable to move from 18th place, though, due to other results, which included a win for 17th-placed Evian.
The two sides play each other at Sochaux on the final day of the season and there is a point between them.
Sochaux had the first real attempt on goal in the eighth minute when the ball came to Ayew's feet following a corner but he somehow put it wide of the post.
There was a further sign of intent from the away side in the 13th when Roy Contout attempted a bicycle kick that did not quite work out.
The breakthrough was then made as Ayew took on Julien Faussurier's through-ball, controlling on his chest before firing an unstoppable shot that cannoned in off the underside of the bar.
Stoppila Sunzu looked to make it 2-0 with a header just before the break but it did not have the power or accuracy to beat goalkeeper Benoit Costil.
The second half began with Kamil Grosicki calling Yohann Pele into action with a low strike that Sochaux goalkeeper pushed aside.
The visitors went back on the attack and Contout met a cross from the left with a powerful volley that Costil has to stay strong to keep out.
Further Sochaux attempts followed, with Sebastien Corchia receiving a pass from Sebastien Roudet but managing to screw his shot wide from just 12 yards out.
Rennes then levelled the contest as N'Tep connected with Steven Moreira's cross. While the ball in was well-placed, Pele completely missed his punch.
But the away side's recovery from that blow was swift, with Mayuka scoring with almost his first touch.
He found himself free at the far post and converted Roudet's cross with the goal gaping.

                                      Own goal delays title party

#INSERT
type:video
END#

Paris Saint-Germain missed out on the opportunity to wrap up a second successive Ligue 1 title as they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Sochaux.

Edinson Cavani's 16th goal of the season could easily have been the breakthrough that secured Le Championnat for Laurent Blanc's men but the hosts, who themselves were in desperate need of points at the other end of the table, hit back through Thiago Silva's own goal.

A much deserved point for Herve Renard's men still leaves them in the bottom three, four points adrift of fourth-bottom Evian, but such a result will offer Les Lionceaux much-needed hope in the battle for survival.

PSG will now need to wait until at least a week on Wednesday to potentially secure the title when they face Rennes in their next Ligue 1 game shortly after Monaco host Guingamp.

With so much at stake, both sides made a high-tempo start to the game with Sochaux's Sebastian Corchia blazing over from a promising position before Ezequiel Lavezzi's powerful cross at the other end just failed to find a team-mate.

Gregory van der Wiel was next to try his luck from the edge of the area but he failed to find the target for the visitors before Cavani's lob almost caught out Yohann Pele but the former Toulouse keeper did superbly to turn the ball over.

Lucas Moura saw a header cleared off the line as PSG began to take charge and their pressure paid off in stunning fashion with the 25-minute mark fast approaching.

Thiago Motta's perfectly-weighted ball found Cavani and the Uruguay international showed great control before dispatching a superb volley beyond Pele to offer hope of a title-winning party in Montbeliard.

Laurent Blanc's side should have doubled their lead just a matter of minutes later but, after robbing Stoppila Sunzu, Lavezzi could only fire over the bar before Sochaux were equally wasteful in front of goal on the stroke of half-time.

Jordan Ayew cleverly turned a harmless cross into Sebastian Roudet's path but his first-time effort from 12 yards was kept out by the feet of Salvatore Sirigu.

However, with little over 10 minutes played in the second half, Sochaux made the all-important breakthrough thanks to a large slice of fortune.

Florian Marange's powerful delivery from the left was turned goalwards by Brazilian defender Alex but, despite saving on his own line, Sirigu could only push the ball against Thiago Silva who diverted the ball into his own net.

Both sides continued to press for the winner but Sochaux keeper Pele was proving to be a stubborn last line of defence.

Firstly, he made a superb double-save from Cavani before keeping Marco Verratti at bay with a fine stop after the Italian had been released by Van der Wiel.

The visitors were not having it all their own way, though, as Ayew somehow missed the target from just a few yards out before Cedric Bakambu just failed to get a telling touch on the Ghana international's delivery minutes later.

                                        Stade de Reims 0-1 Sochaux

Ligue 1 stalwarts Sochaux closed to within two points of securing another season in the top flight by beating Reims 1-0 at the Stade Auguste Delaune.
Ever-presents in the French championship since its inception in 1933, Sochaux have for most of the current season been coming to terms with the prospect of dropping into Ligue 2 and the unknown.
But Sebastian Corchia's first-half goal delivered a second straight win for Les Lionceaux, who are now unbeaten in four games, and another great escape appears to be on the cards for Herve Renard's men.
Corchia tried his luck after only five minutes after Sebastian Roudet freed him up on the counter-attack, but Reims goalkeeper Kossi Agassa managed to make the block.
The Togolese stopper denied Sochaux again two minutes later, recovering well to flick Jordan Ayew's header away from the top corner.
Reims threatened to open the scoring through Grzegorz Krychowiak in the 36th minute - the Pole clattered the crossbar with a header - but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock.
With four minutes remaining before the break, Corchia volleyed Julien Faussurier's cross beyond Agassa to get the away fans bouncing.
The Swiss border club could have done with extending their lead through Sanjin Prcic shortly after play resumed as eighth-placed Reims turned up the heat in their pursuit of an equaliser.
Atila Turan's curling free-kick crashed against a post in the 75th minute and, two minutes from time, Floyd Ayite whipped the ball inches over the bar from just outside the box.
Sochaux boss Renard bellowed at his men to retreat but it was so very nearly not enough as Reims substitute Eliran Atar came sniffing for a late leveller.
The Israeli was well-placed to capitalised when Yohann Pele punched Ayite's corner into the middle of his own box, but the Sochaux keeper got down well to cover Atar's shot and preserved all three points.
ends

                                          Sochaux 2-0 Toulouse

Sochaux kept alive their Ligue 1 survival hopes with a 2-0 home victory over Toulouse.
Jordan Ayew's first-half goal and another from Roy Contout after the break moved Herve Renard's team to within five points of safety with five matches remaining.
The hosts started well and twice hit the woodwork during the early stages.
Ayew saw a volley come back off the crossbar after eight minutes and then three minutes later the Ghanaian hit a post with another well-struck shot.
However, the on-loan Marseille man was not to be denied for long. In the 15th minute Contout sent in a lovely cross from the left and Ayew powered a header past Toulouse goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher. It was the least Sochaux deserved.
Boucher was called into action again just after the half-hour mark to palm away a long-range effort from Florian Marange.
Renard was sent to the stands after 39 minutes for taking his protests too far over the award of a throw-in to Toulouse.
Four minutes after half-time, Sochaux doubled their lead. This time the roles were reversed as Ayew crossed to the far post, where Contout headed home.
Clement Chantome went close with a free-kick for the visitors before Wissam Ben Yedder sent a header over the crossbar as Toulouse applied some rare pressure.
It took another superb save from Boucher to deny Stopilla Sunzu a goal as his header was pushed over the bar with seven minutes remaining.
The closest Toulouse came to a goal was in the 88th minute when Ben Yedder's powerful shot took a deflection off Yohann Pele and struck the bar.
ends

                                            Bastia 2-2 Sochaux

Bastia fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Sochaux that severely dents the Montbeliard outfit's hopes of avoiding relegation.
Visiting Sochaux had looked on course for their first away win of the season in Ligue 1 after scoring twice on the stroke of half-time through Jordan Ayew and Sebastien Corchia.
A victory would have lifted them to within six points of safety, but they were hit by a superb second-half fightback by mid-table Bastia, who earned a share of the spoils thanks to goals from Gianni Bruno and Djibril Cisse.
The first half had looked destined to finish scoreless with the two sides mustering only one decent chance each in the first 44 minutes, Nathan Sinkala's 20-yard drive going inches wide for Sochaux before Bruno saw his effort from distance well saved by Yohann Pele.
However, with the half almost up, Sochaux stunned their hosts by netting twice in quick succession.
Ayew opened the scoring with a looping header from Sebastien Corchia and then the Ghana international helped set up the second for Corchia.
Ayew freed Sebastien Roudet down the left and his cross was headed by Roy Contout into Corchia's path and he tapped home from four yards out.
For a side that had only picked up three points from their 16 previous away games this season, a rare victory on their travels looked tantalising close at the interval.
However, that prospect was smashed as Bastia pulled a goal back in the 53rd minute when Bruno thumped a header past Pele before Cisse struck a stunning equaliser 15 minutes later.
Romaric's 40-yard pass picked out the run of Cisse and the former France international crashed home a first-time volley on the run to leave Mickael Landreau with no chance in the home goal.
That would have been a demoralising moment for Sochaux, but they picked themselves up and almost retook the lead four minutes later only for Landreau to produce a superb reflex save to keep out Contout's shot and ensure his side a point.
ends

                                                Sochaux 1-1 Marseille

Marseille defender Nicolas N'Koulou's 90th-minute equaliser denied struggling Sochaux a valuable win that would have helped move them closer to Evian in the last position of safety in the Ligue 1 standings.
Defender Stoppila Sunzu put Sochaux ahead in the 25th minute and the second-bottom side looked on course to claim their seventh league win of the season, but N'Koulou broke the hearts of the home crowd with the last-minute score as the game ended tied at 1-1.
The result leaves Sochaux still behind third-bottom Valenciennes, while Europe-chasing Marseille remained in sixth place.
The first chances of the game came for the home side when Edouard Butin found Julien Faussurier on the right, who dribbled past Marseille defender Jeremy Morel and crossed towards Jordan Ayew, who headed a few inches over the bar.
However, Sochaux did score on their next real attack through Sunzu, after Sebastien Roudet's corner found the defender in the box, where he curled in a shot with his left foot.
Marseille reacted and had a couple of chances before the break. First Mathieu Valbuena sent a curling 25-yard free-kick inches wide before midfielder Andre Ayew went close only for Sochaux keeper Yohann Pele to get in a block.
It meant the relegation-threatened home side took a slender lead into half-time, and they weathered an early storm from Marseille in the early stages of the second half when Pele saved an Andre-Pierre Gignac volley and stopped another Andre Ayew shot.
Nathan Sinkala tested Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda from distance at the other end in the 71st minute but a goal seemed to be coming for Marseille, with Pele blocking a strike by Florian Thauvin.
The goal finally arrived in the 90th minute through N'Koulou's header, which beat Pele at the second attempt after he punched clear a header from Lucas Mendes.
ends

                                                  St Etienne 3-1 Sochaux

St Etienne moved within two points of third-placed Lille and avoided a third successive league defeat with a confident 3-1 win over 10-man Sochaux.
With Lille due to visit Monaco in the final game of the weekend, Les Verts ensured the pressure was kept on the final Champions League spot thanks to a Franck Tabanou strike sandwiched in between a Mevlut Erding brace.
The hosts began the brighter and looked to stamp their authority early on but Tabanou headed over Yohann Pele's bar from a promising position before Benjamin Corgnet saw his decent effort saved well by the visiting keeper.
St Etienne continued to press for an opener and only a superb stop from Pele prevented Yohan Mollo from finding the back of the net with a 20-yard drive before Stophira Sunzu arrived to block Brandao on the follow-up.
The scores remained level at the break but, undeterred by their lack of success in front of goal so far, the hosts wasted no time in breaking the deadlock after the interval.
Mollo's perfect delivery was met by Erding and the Turkey international's deft header beat Pele with just 60 seconds gone in the second half to set Les Verts on their way. And things got even better for Ligue 1's fourth-placed side just five minutes later when Tabanou added a second. Renaud Cohade saw his stunning volley matched by Pele but the Sochaux goalkeeper could not hold onto the ball and Tabanou was on hand to prod the ball home.
The hosts should have added a third when Pele flapped at a cross and Brandao thought he had added his first of the game but Sunzu blocked before Sochaux were offered a glimmer of hope at the other end. Sebastian Corchia and Cedric Bakambu combined well before picking out Edouard Butin in the area and the substitute was left with a simple task of tucking the ball home with Stephane Ruffier caught out of position.
However, any thoughts of a comeback were duly quashed with 10 minutes left to play when Bakambu handled the ball and referee Benoit Millot showed no hesitation in showing the Sochaux striker his second yellow card of the day.
The points were all but wrapped up for the hosts as injury-time approached when Brandao wriggled his way to the byline before pulling the ball back into the path of Erding and he did the rest with his left foot to restore Sochaux's two-goal advantage.
ends

Dimitar Berbatov scored his first Monaco goal as the principality club immediately got back to winning ways with a 2-1 triumph at home to lowly Sochaux.
Monaco's title challenge suffered a blow last weekend when they lost at St Etienne, but were on course to bounce back after just five minutes as January signing Berbatov struck after six minutes.
Berbatov then won a penalty for James Rodriguez to convert on 54 minutes.
That proved crucial as Sochaux pulled a goal back late on, Edouard Butin scrambling in while he laid on the ground, although Jordan Ayew's petulant kick on Andrea Raggi ended any thought of a comeback as the on-loan striker saw red.
Defeat for Sochaux was made worse as relegation rivals Evian and Valenciennes both won on Saturday, to leave them eight points from safety.
After leaders Paris St Germain won 3-0 at Bastia in Saturday's early kick-off - to open an 11-point gap - Monaco knew anything but victory would almost certainly end their title bid.
Berbatov did not take long to ease any pre-match nerves as he fired in at the far post after Layvin Kurzawa made space down the left and crossed.
Sochaux goalkeeper Yohann Pele slapped away a curling shot from Kurzawa before the visitors hit the woodwork.
Ayew combined with Sebastien Roudet before firing in a cross that an unmarked Roy Contout volleyed against the back post.
Berbatov almost crafted a second for Monaco on 36 minutes when he delivered a well-weighted pass for Mounir Obbadi, who saw his first-time shot beat Pele but not Lionel Zouma.
Sochaux had the first chance after half-time, Sebastien Corchia shooting straight at the keeper after his control and turn, before Berbatov provoked Julien Faussurier into a tackle to earn his side a spot-kick.
Rodriguez converted the chance, as Pele dived away to his right, to make it 2-0.
Sochaux pulled a goal back six minutes from the end as Ayew's cross found its way to Butin who, while initially slipping at the feet of Raggi, kept his nerve to fashion a shot while lying on the turf and catch out Danijel Subasic.
Sochaux wasted the lifeline though as Ayew deservedly saw red for kicking out at Raggi and, while his coach Herve Renard quickly stepped in, the referee had already seen enough to send him on his way.
ends

Bakambu raced behind the red-faced goalkeeper to collect the loose ball and tap home.
ends
