    Bhoys cruise past Irish part-timers

Celtic eased through to their Champions League qualifying tie with an expectedly comfortable 2-0 win over Northern Irish part-timers Cliftonville at Parkhead.Goals from defender Efe Ambrose and forward Georgios Samaras made it 5-0 on aggregate and confirmed the Hoops will play Elfsborg in the next round after the Swedish side won 4-0 against Daugava in Latvia earlier in the day to progress 11-1 over the two legs.Ambrose, who had cut short his delayed summer break for last week's first leg in Belfast when manager Neil Lennon found himself short of defenders, put Celtic ahead in the 16th minute when he headed in an Anthony Stokes cross after clever footwork from Mikael Lustig on the right. As the procession towards the Reds goal continued in the first half James Forrest skimmed Conor Devlin's bar with a right-footed drive in the 38th minute. However, there was no addition to the score until the 70th minute when Samaras, who had scored last week in Belfast, made it 2-0 when he headed in a Kris Commons cross from close range.Gary Hooper - expected to move leave the Parkhead club, probably for QPR - replaced Beram Kayal and hit the outside of the post with an overhead kick but the visitors held out to leave Glasgow with a respectable scoreline.Elfsborg, well into their league season, will provide a tougher for Celtic test than Cliftonville whether or not Mo Bangura, on loan from the Hoops, plays against his parent club and that is the issue which will surround the tie until kick-off time at Parkhead next week.Despite the difficulty if not impossibility of their task, Cliftonville brought over 1,000 enthusiastic and vociferous fans for the game.Reds manager Tommy Breslin admitted the match was in reality a damage-limitation exercise for his part-time side but there appeared little they could do to prevent the home side turning the match into a game of attack versus defence in the early stages. In the fourth minute visiting keeper Devlin made a fine point-blank save from Samaras' header, following an inviting cross from Lustig.Devlin was again called into action to prevent Lustig's cross reaching Samaras but the keeper had no chance with Ambrose's deadlock-breaking header. In the 26th minute Devlin took no chances with a Commons thunderbolt from 25 yards, opting to punch clear of the box.Moments later, following a Cliftonville corner, Hoops defender Kelvin Wilson - a target of Nottingham Forest - stuck his head in the way of a powerful, goal-bound Marc Smyth drive to prevent the Irish supporters having something concrete to cheer. But that was effectively the sum extent of the visitors' first-half threat as Liam Boyce found himself cut adrift as the Reds' lone striker. In the 33rd minute Commons then hit another powerful drive from the edge of the box, before Forrest beat Devlin only to see his shot skip off the top of the bar.Stokes missed with three attempts in quick succession after the break and then, after a fine move by the increasingly-confident visitors, Wilson took the ball off the toes off Boyce almost on the goalline to prevent an unlikely equaliser.Samaras' goal, which put a better sheen on the scoreline, came before Amido Balde replaced Forrest to make his competitive debut and with 10 minutes remaining he headed an Emilio Izaguirre cross past the post. But the game and the tie was well over by that point.Attention will now turn to next week's game against Elfsborg at Parkhead, when, realistically, Celtic will face their first real European test of the season.

      Bhoys cruise past Irish champions

Goals from Mikael Lustig, Georgios Samaras and James Forrest gave Celtic a comfortable 3-0 win over Cliftonville and ensured there is little chance of an upset when the part-time Irish side travel to Parkhead next week for the second leg of their Champions League second qualifier. It had promised to be a nervy night for the visitors, who had lost all four of their pre-season games and who had a clutch of players missing for various reasons. However, Neil Lennon's side, especially in the first 45 minutes, showed the professionalism and purpose which had taken them to the last-16 of the tournament last season.Full-back Lustig gave the Scottish champions the lead at Solitude in the 25th minute when he broke away from the Reds defence at the near post to head in a Kris Commons corner.Six minutes later Greek forward Samaras, who had revealed his aversion for the ground's artificial pitch before the game, finished off a move involving Forrest and Commons by turning at the edge of the box and driving an unstoppable shot past Reds keeper Conor Devlin. And in a one-sided first-half, watched by almost 5,000 enthusiastic fans who had packed into the tiny ground in north Belfast, Commons also hit woodwork twice. With nothing to lose, Tommy Breslin's side rallied in the second half with Stephen Garrett missing a good chance in the 48th minute from close range after Lustig was short with a headed backpass.Anthony Stokes hit the bar for Celtic with a drive before he set up Forrest in the 84th minute to hammer the ball home to make the return game in Glasgow a formality.Celtic started the game with impressive purpose. Commons hit the bar with a header after two minutes when Forrest stood a cross up for the former Derby player. The Hoops were in control and in the 12th minute Samaras headed an Emilio Izaguirre cross over from eight yards.Reds skipper George McMullan then almost put in his own net as he cleared a Lustig header. However, with the corner, Commons drilled in a cross and Lustig rose to flash a header past Devlin from six yards out.Cliftonville responded and for the first time in the game, a minute later, Hoops keeper Fraser Forster was forced into a save, from Liam Boyce's low drive. But just after the half-hour mark and in impressive style, Samaras finished off a Celtic attack with a drive which whistled high past the helpless Devlin.Celtic were clearly in the mood and in the 39th minute Commons twisted and turned at the edge of the box before beating Devlin with a curling shot, only to see it crash off the post. The home fans tried to rally their heroes as they went up the tunnel at the interval and they might have had something to cheer about three minutes after half-time when Garrett pounced on a mistake by Lustig - but his flick from six yards was too feeble to beat Forster.Still, it gave Cliftonville some encouragement and in the 55th minute only a great saving tackle from Ambrose on Joe Gormley prevented the Reds striker getting his shot away from 12 yards, as the Hoops defence looked vulnerable again.Stokes sent a shot from the edge of the box spinning back off the bar but much of the tempo had gone out of the visitors' play - although there was time for Forrest to extend Celtic's lead.
