Alessandro Costacurta says that Stefano Pioli would be a good fit as Inter Milan's new coach as the club look for a successor to replace Frank de Boer.
De Boer was sacked by Inter on Tuesday, less than three months into a three-year contract he signed upon his appointment -- just two weeks before the start of the Serie A season.
Former Bologna and Lazio coach Pioli is reported to be Inter's first choice to take the reins, at least until the end of the season, and former AC Milan defender Costacurta says they would not be making a mistake by appointing him.
"I would pick Pioli," Costacurta told Sky Sport Italia. "Inter have problems in defence, not in attack, and I think the former Lazio coach could resolve this aspect."
Whoever does take over, Costacurta believes his first job will be to instil a positive atmosphere in the dressing room, although he does not believe any of the players were trying to get De Boer sacked.
Costacurta questioned whether Inter were perhaps a little too hasty in getting rid of De Boer, and too slow to appoint him in the first place.
"I think this is a squad that struggles to be a group because they have many players who excel individually and they are made up of great individuals who are not very capable of forming a group," he said.
"It could be that some of them were not performing as well as they could do, but I don't think they were playing against their coach because they would only be doing themselves harm.
"This team needed more time and this coach should not have arrived as late as he did, but it was not right to get rid of him so soon either. I think he would have given Inter a lot of satisfaction, seeing how they played in some of their recent games."
Pioli was reported to be named as Inter's new coach on Wednesday, but Gazzetta dello Sport claims there is no consensus over his appointment.
The club's Chinese owners are understood to not be entirely convinced by the Italian, preferring instead a foreign coach with Guus Hiddink's name being mentioned.
Inter youth-team coach Stefano Vecchi will lead the club in their Europa League clash with Southampton on Thursday, with a permanent successor to De Boer now expected to be named on Friday.
