EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Tony Meola made a Kansas
City-record nine saves for his MLS-record 14th shutout of the
season as the Wizards and New York-New Jersey MetroStars played to
a scoreless tie Wednesday night.
The Wizards, 1-4-4 in their last nine road games, have a
league-best 14-7-7 record and 49 points. The MetroStars, 5-0-3 in
their last eight home games, are second at 15-10-3 and 48 points.
New York-New Jersey's Tim Howard made four saves for his fifth
shutout.
The MetroStars dominated the first half, outshooting the Wizards
14-7. It was more of the same in the second half, but neither team
was able to score despite several good chances.
The MetroStars had two good chances. Mike Petke's shot from 15
yards outside the box was tipped over the bar by Meola in the 62nd
minute, and Alex Comas' header off Petter Villegas' cross missed
just wide in the 72nd minute.
A header by the MetroStars' Clint Mathis sailed just over the
bar in the third minute of overtime.
