SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Despite setting club records for shots and corner kicks, the San Jose Earthquakes were shutout 3-0 by the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.
The Earthquakes (6-15-8, 26 points) were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs earlier in the day when the New England Revolution won.
The Galaxy (13-8-8, 47 points) clinched a playoff spot behind
two goals by Simon Elliott and a penalty kick by Luis Hernandez.
The Earthquakes dominated the first 20 minutes of the match,
earning 10 corner kicks and forcing three saves by Galaxy
goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.
Los Angeles didn't miss in the 29th minute, however. Elliot
blasted a cross from 20 yards out for his fourth goal of the season
and a 1-0 lead.
Elliott scored again in the 61st minute, and the Galaxy made it
3-0 in the 75th minute on Hernandez's penalty kick.
