Miami slips 3 points behind eighth place

WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. United forward Raul Diaz Arce scored the game-winning overtime goal in the 94th minute to beat the Miami Fusion 2-1 Saturday night.

Midfielder Bobby Convey sent a long pass down the center of the field intended for Diaz Arce, but he was being shielded from the ball by Miami defender Tyrone Marshall. However, as the ball reached the edge of the penalty area, Marshall and Fusion goalkeeper Nick Rimando collided, leaving the ball and Diaz Arce untouched to score the game-winner, his fifth of the season.

With D.C. trailing 1-0 in the 73rd minute, midfielder Nelson Vargas failed to clear A.J. Wood's shot from just outside the penalty area. The deflection went straight up, allowing Pete Marino to volley his second goal of the year behind Rimando.

Former D.C. forward Roy Lassiter needed just 37 seconds to net the fastest goal in Miami history, gathering a deflected pass from Martin Machon inside the six-yard penalty box to score his eighth goal of the year. Machon has an assist in five straight games.

With the loss, Miami (10-13-5, 35 points) trails the Columbus Crew by three points for eighth place in MLS standings. The top eight teams reach the playoffs.

United (7-16-6, 27 points) must win one of its final three games to avoid finishing the season with the fewest number of wins in an MLS season.
