DALLAS (AP) -- Clint Mathis scored an MLS-record five goals and also set a league mark with 10 points as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars clinched the Eastern Division with a 6-4 victory over the Dallas Burn on Saturday night.
"We did a great job of putting pressure on all night on the
Burn defense. Things just seemed to go our way during the game,"
Mathis said. "I was in the zone and every shot I took went in each
time. However, what is important is not my five goals, but the fact
that we won the Eastern Division title. That is such a great
accomplishment for us this season."
Mathis put the MetroStars on the board three minutes into the
game on a through pass by Alex Comas from the top of the penalty
arc. Mathis, the MLS player of the week, fired a shot into the
upper right corner past goalkeeper Matt Jordan.
He increased the lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute on a rebound.
Dallas' Ariel Graziani cut the lead to 2-1 seconds later with
his 12th goal of the season.
Mathis recorded his third goal in the 40th minute on another
nice pass by Comas. Mathis' three goals were the quickest in team
history by one player.
The Burn cut the deficit to 3-2 in injury time as Jorge Rodriguez took a through pass inside the penalty area from Chad Deering and beat Tim Howard just seconds before the end of the first half.
The Burn tied it and took the lead for the first time early in
the second half. Oscar Pareja tied the game in the 54th minute,
while Antonio Martinez scored the go-ahead goal on a pass from
Rodriguez in the 64th.
Mathis recorded his fourth and fifth goals of the game in the
64th and 68th minute, giving him 16 on the season, 13 since joining
the MetroStars from Los Angeles.
Deering brought down Billy Walsh during a scramble and Mathis' resulting penalty kick set the league record for five goals in a game.
Adolfo Valencia put the game away on a breakaway in the 88th minute.
The Burn outshot the Metros 23-15.
