SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Jon Conway made 11 saves and John Doyle and Ian Russell scored in the first four minutes as the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Columbus Crew 3-0 on Friday night.
Wojtek Krakowiak scored in the 90th minute for the Earthquakes
(7-16-8), who stopped a six-game home losing streak.
A sellout crowd of 26,853 -- third-largest for an MLS game -- sat
through cold, rainy conditions at Spartan Stadium for a doubleheader.
The U.S. Women's National Team beat Brazil 4-0 before the
Columbus-San Jose game. Mia Hamm scored two goals and Julie Foudy
and Joy Fawcett also scored in the team's final match before the
Sydney Olympics.
The Earthquakes struck quickly against the Crew (11-14-5).
Dario Brose sent a low corner kick in from the right side in the
second minute for his career-high fourth goal.
Just two minutes later, the Earthquakes struck again thanks to a
Columbus miscue. Crew defender Miroslaw Rzepa and goalkeeper Matt
Napoleon miscommunicated on a ball, leaving San Jose's Russell with
the ball and Napoleon away from the goal. Russell, with his back to
the goal, kicked it over Napoleon's shoulder.
In the 90th minute, Krakowiak took a couple of dribbles toward
the net, then blasted it past Napoleon for his fifth goal of the
season.
