Serna scores Fusion-record 4 goals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Diego Serna's team-record four goals led Miami past the New York-New Jersey MetroStars 4-1 Saturday night, keeping the Fusion's playoff hopes alive.

The improved to 11-14-5 for 38 points, tied with Columbus for ninth place. The top eight teams qualify for the postseason.

Dallas and Colorado are tied for seventh with 40 points.

Serna scored twice in the last two minutes of the first half, and added two more goals in nine minutes late in the game. His 12 goals this season are also a club record.

Serna made it 1-0 with a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, after he was fouled in the penalty box by MetroStars defender Mark Semioli. A minute later, Serna scored off a pass from midfielder Henry Gutierrez.

Alex Comas cut the MestroStars' deficit right before halftime by making a penalty kick awarded for Miami defender Pablo Mastroeni's handball.

Miami made it 3-1 in the 72nd. Midfielder Jim Rooney stole the ball from MetroStars defender Steve Shak and centered a pass to Serna, whose 12-yard shot beat goalkeeper Tim Howard. Rooney also assisted on Serna's last goal nine minutes later.

The MetroStars (16-11-3, 51 points) already have clinched the Eastern Division title.
