Revolution still not in the playoffs

WASHINGTON -- Pete Marino scored twice in a six-minute span early in the second half and D.C. United beat New England 2-0 Sunday, preventing the Revolution from clinching a playoff berth.

New England, which had won its first three meetings with United this season, needs to win one of its final two games -- both at home -- to make the playoffs.

D.C., which snapped the Revolution's three-game winning streak, won for only the second time in six games and is 6-6-3 at home. Goalkeeper Mark Simpson made only two saves for his first shutout of the season.

Marino's third goal of the year broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute. Jeff Agoos curled a free kick into the right side of the penalty area and Marino tallied on a header from 10 yards out.

In the 61st minute, Marino dashed untouched through the penalty area to poke a right-wing feed from A.J. Wood past goalie Juergen Sommer.

Sommer, who was hurt on the play as he tried to slide-tackle the ball away from Marino, left the game and was replaced by Jeff Causey.

New England played without leading scorer Wolde Harris, who is with Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier, and defender Rusty Pierce, who sat out the game for accumulating too many caution points.
