New England Revolution's new DP Xavier Kouassi suffers knee injury

The New England Revolution's latest acquisition Xavier Kouassi faces an extended period on the sidelines after injuring his right knee and being carted off the pitch in Switzerland on Sunday.

Kouassi signed with the Revs last week as a designated player from Swiss club FC Sion with a plan to join the MLS club this summer.

But the midfielder injured his knee and was replaced in the second half of Sunday's 1-0 win over FC Zurich.

Sion manager Didier Tholot told Le Nouvelliste that Kouassi's season in the Swiss Super League was over, and the newspaper reported that Kouassi would be out of action for six to nine months after tearing his ACL.

Kouassi's injury could impact the Revolution's decision on whether to re-sign Jermaine Jones, whose contract ran out after last season.

Jones has struggled to find a new club because he faces a six-game suspension. He has publicly criticised New England's previous offers, though the club said last week that talks are still ongoing.
