Chastain, CyberRays edge visiting Breakers
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Brandi Chastain atoned for a missed
penalty kick and scored the game-winning goal in the San Jose
CyberRays' 2-1 victory Saturday over the Boston Breakers.
The goal gave the CyberRays (1-0-0) their first home win over
Boston (0-1-0), which earned a win and a tie in San Jose last
Chastain fired a right-footed volley past Boston goalkeeper
Karina LeBlanc in the 88th minute for the winner.
After a scoreless first half, Maren Meinert gave Boston a 1-0
lead in the 50th minute.
Meinert pounced on a rebound of Sarah Yohe's shot and scored
into the upper left corner of the net.
In the 69th minute, referee Sandra Hunt whistled for a penalty
kick after Breakers defender Monica Gonzalez handled the ball
inside the Boston penalty area.
Chastain, who converted a left-footed penalty kick for the
United States in the 1999 World Cup final, pushed her right-footed
shot wide left.
The CyberRays began their comeback with a goal from Brazilian
forward Pretinha in the 73rd minute. Tisha Venturini-Hoch set up
Pretinha for the shot from 19 yards out. The ball deflected off of
Boston defender Jena Kluegel and past LeBlanc, who started in place
of the injured Tracy Ducar.
Boston was also missing Kristine Lilly, Kate Sobrero and
Brandi Chastain, right, sparked the WUSA defending champion CyberRays to a win in their opener.(AP)
